Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP, Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

This post is located in the GEF Biodiversity and Land Degradation Unit (GEF BD/LD Unit), Biodiversity and Land Branch within the Ecosystems Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the GEF BD/LD Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities

1. Provide assistance in support of planning and implementation activities/processes for the programme of work.

2. Research, compile, analyze, summarize, and present basic information/data on specific programmes/project and related topics.

3. Assist in the coordination of programme/project planning and preparation.

4. Assist in the preparation and analysis of programme/project budget proposals; provide assistance in the interpretation of budget guidelines.

5. Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of programmes/projects; categorize, update, track and analyze data related to programmes/projects; carry out periodic status reviews, identify issues and initiates requisite follow-up actions; prepare revised budget estimates; reports on budget revisions, expenditures and obligations, verify availability of funds; ensure necessary approval and entry in computerized budget system in UMOJA; initiate financial authorizations for expenditures.

6. Collaborate with programme/project managers on performance reporting; provide assistance on reporting requirements, guidelines, rules and procedures and ensure completeness and accuracy of data submitted.

7. Draft programme/project summary, coordinate review and clearance process.

8. Serve as focal point for coordination, monitoring and expedition of programme/project implementation activities, involving extensive liaison with a diverse organizational units to initiate requests, prepare standard terms of reference against programme/project objectives, obtain necessary clearances, process and follow-up on administrative actions and resolve issues related to project implementation.

9. Prepare, maintain and update files (electronic and paper) and internal databases; design and generate a variety of periodic and ad hoc reports, statistical tables, graphic content and other background materials/notes.

10. Draft correspondence and communications related to all aspects of programme/project administration.

11. Provide general administration support to the team.

12. Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.

13. Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.

14. Perform other related duties as may assigned.

Education

Completion of high diploma is required.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Successful passing of the Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) in English at the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ), Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) may be
accepted in lieu of the GGST.

The GGST is administered to applicants when required before the administration of a written assessment and/or interview.

Job - Specific Qualification

Additional technical training in administration,accounting, finance or other relevant field is desired

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of work experience in the field of programmatic, administrative and/or technical support or in other related fields is required

Experience in the monitoring and evaluation of programmes/projects is desirable

Experience working with an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is desirable

Experience working with an international organization is desirable.

One (1) or more years of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Note: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension.
