Overview

The Vice President for External Relations, Fundraising and Communications assists the President & CEO in accomplishing the Vision, Mission, and Strategic Objectives of Jhpiego. Primary responsibilities include establishing strategic priorities for fundraising and resource development; external communications; advocacy; cultivating and maintaining relationships with Member agencies, donors and other stakeholders; participating in the representation of the organization in various arenas; and serving as member of the Leadership Team of Jhpiego.

 

Responsibilities

Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Leads, provides guidance to, and ensures accountability of Jhpiego fundraising staff. Ensures that the fundraising staff has clear and achievable objectives; the resources and institutional support needed to carry out responsibilities; and positive and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and with counterparts in Jhpiego.
  • Develops a sound, achievable, comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet the goals for unrestricted and private restricted fundraising set by the Board of Directors. Leads and coordinates the fundraising staff team to implement the plan efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensures that the fundraising strategy of Jhpiego is adequately diversified and includes tactics in specific areas such as major donors, web-based giving, foundations, corporate support, etc.
  • Collaborates with staff across the organization in order to ensure consistency in representing Jhpiego to potential donors and other audiences.
  • Develops and executes a strategy to increase unrestricted giving to Jhpiego.

Communications

  • Manages, provides guidance to, and ensures accountability of Jhpiego communications staff. Ensures that the communications team members have clear and achievable objectives; the resources and institutional support needed to carry out responsibilities; and positive and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and with counterparts in Jhpiego.
  • Presents, as well as encourages and supports colleagues to present, Jhpiego Program results and achievements through speaking engagements, meetings with stakeholders (groups or individuals), articles in professional journals, and other approaches.
  • Works with communications staff to develop communications and advocacy materials for technical audiences and key relationships.

Advocacy

  • Manages, provides guidance to, and ensures accountability of Jhpiego advocacy staff. Ensures that the advocacy team members have clear and achievable objectives; the resources and institutional support needed to carry out responsibilities; and positive and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and with counterparts in Jhpiego.
  • Collaborates with appropriate Jhpiego staff and seek input from the VP for Programs and the VP of Technical and Innovations to develop the policy agenda for Jhpiego.
  • Works with advocacy staff to ensure a strong, consistent advocacy voice in a variety of strategic settings (InterAction, NGOs, USG, Congress, etc.) to advance Jhpiego’s issue areas and to develop business opportunities.

 

External Relations

  • Support the advancement of the Jhpiego’s mission through the nurturing of existing relationships associated with current Program services and through the establishment and strengthening of new partnerships to enhance the role of Jhpiego in health, and development work.
  • Participate as appropriate in the representation of Jhpiego in varied fora such as national and international conferences, partner and donor agency meetings, Member agency meetings, etc.
  • Owns and fosters good relations and demonstrates continued engagement with the Jhpiego Advisory Board under the leadership of the CEO and President

Internal Relations

  • Serves effectively as a member of the Leadership Team, communicating and consulting on personnel, programmatic, financial and other issues related to Program development and management.
  • Establishes a comprehensive and timely reporting schedule across the organization to undergird communications, fundraising, and advocacy strategies.
  • Undertakes appropriate domestic or international travel to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.

Supervision

  • Provides coaching, guidance and mentorship to direct report(s) where needed
  • Sets targets and objectives for assigned area and delivers results
  • Grows team expertise to align with program and organizational direction while continually looking for ways to provide / enhance the value delivered
  • Leads a high-performing team and provides ongoing feedback and performance reviews
  • Tracks, monitors and effectively addresses and / or rewards performance of team members
  • Manages employees in compliance with all HR policies, procedures, guidelines
  • Shares knowledge, information, skills and subject matter expertise among the team and ensures the timely communication of issues while encouraging good working relationships with other functions / teams
  • Recruits for all hires to ensure a highly diverse, qualified workforce with the necessary capabilities needed to achieve goals

 

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related field
  • 15+ years' of fundraising and communications experience. Experience should include leadership in the areas of internal/external communications, fundraising, resource development and advocacy.
  • A proven record of strong interpersonal and team leadership skills, preferably leading an external relation (fundraising or communications) staff team.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and experience in developing strategic partnerships with a diverse network of donor and partner organizations
  • Proven track record in proposal development and successful resource mobilization in support of international development with major donors (USG, World Bank, and others).
  • Working knowledge of USG grant regulations. Successful resource mobilization for major international health programs preferred.
  • Excellent English skills, written and oral.
  • Experience in working with a multicultural workforce with sensitivity and appreciation of cultural differences
  • Appreciation for and willingness to commit to the corporate mission of Jhpiego.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required to carry out responsibilities.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of socio-cultural, health and development issues, trends and challenges in the regions where Jhpiego programs are established or emerging.
  • Communications or resource development experience within the context of an International NGO.
  • Proven proficiency in a second language applicable to Jhpiego work (French or Spanish).

 

The salary range for this role is expected to be: $186,577 - $248,770.

The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
