Mission and objectives
Our vision is a world where every woman is safe, healthy and lives free from female genital mutilation (FGM). Our purpose is to work with anti-FGM activists to promote, sustain and safeguard the physical and emotional well-being of women by the global eradication of FGM. We need to significantly scale up and accelerate our efforts, using identified effective practices to guide our approach. Everyone has an important role to play in ending FGC. Ending cutting can’t be achieved by one organisation alone. It requires a movement of organisations, activists, politicians, ambassadors and leaders at all levels.
Context
Orchid Project is catalysing an end to female genital mutilation / cutting (FGM/C) by working collaboratively and in partnership to accelerate change at community, national, regional and global levels, and by sharing knowledge and best practice. By collating and interpreting data, 28 Too Many (part of Orchid Project) influences influencers (e.g. UN bodies) and equips local organisations with advocacy and training tools to strengthen their on-the-ground work. 28 Too Many joined Orchid Project in April 2021. For the unprecedented series of The Law and FGM reports across Africa, 28 Too Many received the Trustlaw's Collaboration Award in 2018 and the Best Collaboration Initiative Award at the Lawyermag Awards in 2019. The European series of The Law and FGM reports have been launched and are going through the translation process into the relevant national languages. By translating this report, volunteers with a Human Rights / Gender and legal background would deepen their understanding on how the role the law plays in eradicating a very deeply anchored harmful tradition and in protecting girls, what further actions could be carried out, and how organisations use such tools to advocate for social change. This task ensures the volunteers are part of this change. It could also broaden the volunteers' interest in human rights, potentially influence career prospects, or help save an uncut girl in their countries.
