Mission and objectives

UNODC's mission is to contribute to global peace and security, human rights and development by making the world safer from drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism.

Context

UNODC's goal is to make the world safer from drugs, organised crime, corruption and terrorism by combating these threats to achieve health, security and justice for all and by promoting sustainable peace and well-being. The Strategic Vision for Africa is UNODC’s answer to the continent’s evolving needs, and its expectations from the UN, as we enter the Decade of Action to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals, and work to realize the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The Regional Office for Southern Africa, based in Pretoria, South Africa, takes forward UNODC’s cross-cutting work and results across the Southern Africa Development Cooperation (SADC) region. This includes UNODC efforts to promote the rule of law in support of peacebuilding and to address post-conflict challenges. It also includes action to tackle dangerous linkages between terrorism and organized crime identified by the Security Council, and to safeguard land, air and seas from exploitation by criminals and terrorists, thereby protecting lives and livelihoods. The Strategic Vision for Africa (SV-A) advances UNODC emphasis on prevention - of drug threats, crime, corruption and radicalization to terrorism - and highlights the need to strengthen gender-sensitive responses and promote women leaders in criminal justice. This internship is a part of UNODC HIV/AIDS Section’s Global Programme that aims to provide a targeted support to UNODC High Priority Countries in their efforts towards ending AIDS epidemic as public health threat by 2030 in West and Central Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, Middle East and North Africa, South-Eastern Europe and Central Asia, South Asia and South-East Asia and Pacific. UNODC supports countries in these regions, including South Africa, in their efforts towards ending AIDS epidemic among key populations of people who use drugs and people in prisons and other closed settings through technical assistance, advocacy and partnership with justice, law enforcement, health, civil society and community-led organizations. The focus of this internship is to support the implementation of the UNODC HIV Programme in the Southern African Region.
