BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SLC IRC health team strives to ensure that our clients are physically and mentally healthy and able to access healthcare independently. We reach every individual settled and provide programing to meet clients where they are. The program consists of several focus areas: health promotion, health access, women’s health, mental health, community health and outreach, maternal and child health, transportation and gender equity.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:

The Women’s Health Promotion intern will be supporting our Afghan Women’s Health Project that focuses on women’s sexual and reproductive health. We are working with our clients, community, and broader organizations to create client-centered solutions to build women’s health programing. This internship position would be supporting the facilitation of needs assessments, data collection, community outreach and partnership, and material development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

              Facilitating and Conducting a women’s health needs assessments with IRC clients and other community members

              Help create and develop health promotion materials specific to the needs assessment and related topics

              Present, distribute, and evaluate educational/promotional materials

              Organize and facilitate groups, classes and events

              Participate in trainings and professional development opportunities

              Communicate progress and challenges with supervisor

              Supporting cross-team collaboration for other health needs

              Provide transportation to/from client medical and health appointements

              Office duties: transport a client to a health appointment weekly; complete Office Support shift monthly

1.            Gain an understanding of how to provide sensitive health education to diverse populations.

2.            Will be able to apply creative strategies for outreach and advocacy of women’s health goals.

3.            Improvement of professional skills, working as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.
