Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting, Purpose and Objective:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy is established at the West Asia Office within the framework of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between UNEP and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Consultant will report to the Project Manager at UNEP West Asia Office.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Consultant will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties & responsibilities:

1. Provide technical inputs and advice on coordination of relationships with key partners and technical inputs to MEWA's efforts at the country level to develop new and innovative partnerships.
2. Provide strategic guidance to MEWA on the Civil Society Groups work on engaging youth and women populations on issues of environment, as well as establishing partnerships with youth civil society organizations and individual activists.
3. Provide strategic guidance MEWAs Civil Society Group's work on engaging faith-based organizations on issues of environment, as well as establishing partnerships with faith based civil society organizations and individual activists.
4. Provide conceptual, monitoring and coordination expertise to the MEWA's work as required, including on Task Force on Civil Society.
5. Development of high-quality advocacy tools that emerged from civil society engagement.

Expected Outputs and Deliverables:

1. Detailed workplan for civil society groups in Saudi Arabia.
2. Initial assessment of civil society groups including advocacy and mobilization strategy.
3. Civil Society Groups strategy and advocacy products.
4. Training courses and capacity building programs.
5. Monthly progress report of Civil Society Groups.
6. Final report Civil Society Groups.

Qualifications/special skills

Bachelor's degree in international relations, political science, environmental science, public policy, natural sciences, or related fields is required. Master’s degree is desirable.
Minimum of 10 years of professional technical experience in the field of partnerships with Civil Society Groups is required.
Knowledge of environment issues related to civil society groups in Saudi Arabia is an asset.
Experience working in West Asia is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
