Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The position is located in the Strategic Monitoring and Reporting Unit of the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Branch with the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI) of UN-Habitat in Nairobi.
ERSKI is responsible for strategic planning, monitoring and reporting, providing programmatic direction and operationalization of UN-Habitat's focal point role for the New Urban Agenda in the UN system and for coordination of Emergency Programmes.
The Strategic Planning and Monitoring Branch is responsible for advising on and coordinating strategic planning, results-based management, monitoring and reporting of the strategic plan; the Branch supports Member States with the voluntary reporting on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda; it serves as Secretariat of the Programme Review Committee.
The Strategic Monitoring and Reporting Unit is responsible carrying out corporate/summative monitoring and reporting of the implementation of the strategic plan, ensuring the development and effective functioning of programme performance information system; to coordinate the preparation of substantive programme performance reports for submission to UN-Habitat’s governing bodies and their subsidiary bodies' meetings as requested by Member States, for implementation of global agendas, and for monitoring activities related to sustainable urbanization (Politics, Diplomacy and Governing Bodies / Corporate Report / Global Agenda and Sustainable Urbanization Monitoring and Reporting) and to coordinate, curate and share internal and external best practices.
The position reports to the Chief of the Strategic Monitoring and Reporting Unit
• Develops, implements and evaluates assigned programmes/projects, etc; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
• Plans and coordinates the preparation of annual programme performance reports of UN-Habitat and other reviews and assessments, as needed.
• Performs technical advisory assignments, in collaboration with the other units in UN-Habitat, by planning facilitating workshops, including through other interactive sessions, and assisting in developing action plans.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
• Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, coordination of evaluations or other research activities and studies,
• Generates programme/project related surveys; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions/recommendations.
• Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. background papers, analysis, full reports, including programme performance reports, or sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
• Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, prepares meeting outcome reports etc.
• Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities, notably on monitoring and reporting.
• Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and prepares mission summaries, etc.
• Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
• Performs other duties as required.

Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. ACCOUNTABILITY : Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honours commitments; delivers outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards; operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules; supports subordinates, provides oversight and takes responsibility for delegated assignments; takes personal responsibility for his/her own shortcomings and those of the work unit, where applicable.
Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.
Minimum of Seven (7) years of progressively responsible work experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
Experience in preparing annual programme performance reports is required.
Experience in policy development, analysis of issues and trends and/or coordination of evaluations is desirable.
Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required, knowledge of French or another official United Nations language is desirable.

Appointment against this position is for a period of one year and may be subject to extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary- General and to assignment by him or her.
