INTERN - LIBRARY, (Open to students resident in Jamaica only) [Temporary]
Org. Setting and Reporting
The internship is located in the Satya N. Nandan Library within the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) at the Headquarters of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) located in Kingston, Jamaica, and reports directly to the Knowledge Management Officer.
The Satya N. Nandan Library is a highly specialized international library, providing research and information services to support the needs of ISA’s members, the permanent missions based in Kingston, the staff of the Secretariat as well as other researchers and stakeholders.
The position is for a minimum duration of two months and up to a maximum of six months with a starting date within the period of 1 June – 30 November 2023.
The internship is unpaid and can either be part-time or full-time. It is open to students based in Jamaica who are looking to gain practical experience for academic credit in librarianship in a special library setting. There shall be no expectation of contract change or renewal at the end of this assignment; it is expected that the intern will return to the sponsoring academic institution for completion of their studies.
The intern will work five days a week (35 hours). Part-time interns work 17.5 hours a week.
The objective of the internship is to assist in fulfilling the mandate of ISA, while providing practical training to the intern. Responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and interest areas within librarianship as well as the length of the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Knowledge Management Officer, and within limits of assigned authority, duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Respond to requests for documents and library resources and advise on their accessibility
• Sort records and publications to be donated, retained and disposed of in keeping with the UN Record’s Management Policy
• Assist with reference and client services
• Assist with the development and maintenance of Knowledge Management tools
• Digitization projects
• Assists with the development and maintenance of the Library Database
• Engage in Collection Development
• Contribute to library projects

To qualify for an internship with the Satya N. Nandan Library within the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) at the Headquarters of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) the following conditions must be met:
a. Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school programme in library and information studies; or have graduated with a university degree in library and information studies or related field, and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
b. Know about online library catalogues, OCLC, DDC and other cataloguing and bibliographic tools
c. Be computer literate in standard software applications; strong research skills and experience with knowledge management are an advantage;
d. Have experience using MS Office applications including website administration with SharePoint
e. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and of the ISA, and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
f. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
g. Takes initiative, under minimal supervision
h. Strong interpersonal skills
i. Demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to learning

English and French are the working languages of the ISA. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an asset.
