The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. UNV works with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well- supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is active in around 130 countries every year. With field presences in over 60 countries, UNV is represented worldwide. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Among its units, is the Volunteer Advisory Services Section (VASS) based at UNV Headquarters in Bonn, with the key role to position UNV as a knowledge and policy hub on volunteering for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). VASS brokers and generates evidence and knowledge to promote and advocate with a broad range of stakeholders the integration of volunteerism in their policies and plans.
In July 2020, UNV launched the UNV Knowledge Portal on Volunteerism, a one stop platform for knowledge management and dissemination. It comprises the following components:
- A country profile database of volunteer data
- An evidence library of global publications on themes related to volunteering
- A knowledge exchange, an interactive space for knowledge sharing, discussions, exchange, dissemination, and interaction on different volunteering topics.
Three years after its launch, UNV is taking stock of its work on knowledge management, brokering and exchange with the aim of scaling up and improving work in this area. Aligned to this overall objective are two important sub-strands of work. Firstly, UNV is starting the process to develop its next flagship publication the “State of the World’s Volunteerism Report” for launch and publication in 2024/25. Knowledge management and partnerships, as well as knowledge brokering, and dissemination will be central to the development and outreach process of the report. Secondly, three years after the development of the UNV Knowledge Portal, now is the time to reappraise the portal, what is working and not working with the objective to enhance its technical functionality, data and content, and usability and accessibility of the portal.
