About Learn to Discern India Academy

IREX’s Learn to Discern India Academy (L2D-IA) project?is designed to deliver four intensive English-language media literacy courses for youth across five districts in India (New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai). IREX will adapt its globally tested Learn to Discern media literacy approach to the Indian context to build healthy critical, responsible, and empathy-driven information engagement habits among Indian youth, helping them understand their information environment and develop essential critical information engagement skills. L2D-IA will equip India’s next generation of leaders to make decisions based on quality data and verified facts.

About the position:

IREX is recruiting for a pool of trainers with basic understanding of media literacy or related disciplines, such as journalism, fact-checking, education and experience of working with youth. Selected individuals will participate in a three-day training of trainers event (tentatively scheduled in the beginning of May 2023) in New Delhi, India to prepare them to facilitate four L2D India Academy courses for Indian youth ages 18-25 selected across five Indian districts: New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

IREX expects to launch the online L2D-IA course platform in late May/early June, with activities continuing through the end of summer 2023 (with a possibility of extension, pending program funds, and scheduling needs).

Most learning sessions will be conducted online through the L2D-IA learning management system (LMS). Selected candidates will work in pairs (one pair per target district) to support the implementation of the L2D-IA program.

This will include:
• Co-leading at least eight in-person peer learning exchanges that bring together participating youth in small groups for reflection on the material, networking, and practical application of new skills and knowledge.
• Support to L2D-IA participants as they work together to develop practical media literacy projects that draw from skills and knowledge gained through the course.
• Ongoing mentoring and coaching availability to L2D-IA participants and support for the course community (e.g., through social media platforms and other online forms of engagement)
• Exact tasks may vary from trainer to trainer, depending on the project’s needs in the assigned district, the expertise of individuals within a co-training pair, etc.
• Other tasks as agreed with IREX.
• All training/activity dates will be set in coordination with IREX.
L2D-IA expects to select 10 candidates (2 candidates from each of the five districts listed above) based on the criteria established in the “Qualifications” section below. Selected candidates must be able to commit to the full engagement period, estimated to cover 25-30 days during May - September 2023. The exact number of days may vary slightly between districts depending on project/participant needs.

Qualifications:
• University degree in a relevant field (journalism, communications, education, political science, sociology, psychology, or related disciplines), or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated training or teaching experience (preference will be given for candidates with 3 or more years of experience; preference will also be given for those with experience training/teaching in the field of media/news, journalism, communications, fact-checking, media literacy or related topics);
• Basic understanding of media and information literacy, news literacy, digital literacy.
• University degree in a relevant field (journalism, communications, education, political science, sociology, psychology, or related disciplines), or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge and experience working with youth (ages 18-25) is preferred (experience with vulnerable and/or marginalized youth who may be at risk of exclusion will also be an asset)
• Ability to facilitate interactive, engaging, learner-centered sessions.
• Knowledge of/experience using interactive training methods (e.g., small group discussions, role-playing, quizzes, and demonstrations, etc.) and digital tools (e.g., social media accounts and messaging applications, web search, reverse image search techniques, geolocation, etc.) is preferred.
• Knowledge of/experience using online tools, courses, and/or learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Moodle, etc.) is preferred.
• Experience moderating dialogues, public discussions, focus groups, or similar activities (especially for youth) is preferred.
• Experience with English-language instructional programs and/or resources is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience leading/co-leading activities, events, and/or initiatives (e.g., training workshops, camps, competitions, tournaments, etc.), with responsibility for coordination of participants, materials, logistics, and reporting is preferred.
• Languages: professional fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English and Hindi is required; similar fluency with other languages spoken in India, such as Bengali, is a plus.
• Demonstrated understanding of pedagogy is preferred.
• Demonstrated understanding of media landscape and media environment in India is preferred.
• Curiosity, open-mindedness, and desire to contribute to the L2D-IA community.
• Applicants who have access to networks to recruit potential participants, such as students and youth, may be an asset.
