BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises by helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC works in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to help people to survive, reclaim control of their future, and strengthen their communities.

SCOPE OF WORK: IRC San Diego has been providing Refugee Education Acculturation Civic Engagement and Health (REACH) Youth Programs in San Diego County since 1996, helping more than 300 refugee youths to stay in school, graduate, and smoothly transition to college or a career. The Youth Department is dedicated to supporting newly arrived refugee/immigrant youths across multiple school sites by helping them process potential trauma and acculturation stress, while also enhancing their language acquisition. The REACH Summer Internship offers a unique opportunity to work with High School Youth and help facilitate a two-session summer program that focuses on enhancing Social-Emotional Learning and English Language Development Skills.

The first session "Exploring Sports & San Diego (ESSD)," will take place in the afternoons and will be an opportunity for students attending summer school to spend time outside, exercise, and connect with peers. It is focused on social-emotional learning development through sports and fitness activities, English language development, and acculturation. This program will run June 26 – July 18, from 1:30 – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Each week, students will be introduced to a different sport activity and participate in a weekly field trip on Friday.

The second session “New Horizons” will be a full-day program focused on college and career exploration, self-expression through the arts, and SEL skill development. Youth will engage in activities to foster healthy peer relationships and a positive sense of self and think about and understand their strengths. Through these activities, students in will have the opportunity to practice their English Language skills in a safe and supportive environment. Each week will feature a field trip, including visits to local Universities, art exhibits, and/or behind-the- scenes tours of various local businesses. New Horizons will empower students to grow confident in their skin and telling their stories to take
meaningful steps in achieving their vision for their future. The program will run July 24 – August 11, Monday – Friday, from 11 am – 4 pm daily.
