Mission and objectives
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) mobilizes and coordinates humanitarian action for all in need, in partnership with national and international actors. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort.
Context
OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to: Alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; Advocate for the rights of people in need; Promote preparedness and prevention; and facilitate sustainable solutions. OCHA was established as a result of a General Assembly Resolution 46/182 adopted in December 1991, designed to strengthen the United Nations' response to both complex emergencies and natural disasters. Task description
Under the direct supervision of OCHA Head of Information Management, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Data Analysis Organize, design and carry out the evaluation and analysis of location specific datasets through meaningful statistical techniques; participate in the development and revision of data standards (e.g. the Humanitarian Exchange Language) and advise on the application of these standards into local systems and processes; participate in the development, implementation and management of new indicators, together with its accompanying data, to be included in a Common Humanitarian Dataset; understand, document and ensure the quality of high-value humanitarian data for accuracy, consistency and comparability; Geographic Information System (GIS) & Mapping Develop and maintain spatial baseline and operational datasets in accordance with relevant standards and guidance; produce and update high-quality map products and online services; maintain a repository of spatial data and ensure that the data are documented and accessible to all humanitarian partners through local and/or online services. Visualization Produce and update information products such as reports, charts and infographics by turning data into graphical products to convey messages and a storyline; lead the development of various standard and agreed upon information products on a regular schedule, as indicated by the Information Management Unit in Kabul; develop advocacy materials including posters, presentations and other visual materials. Multimedia Using available data, assist in developing and producing multimedia concepts and narratives to raise awareness on humanitarian crises and needs, and support OCHA Afghanistan’s role and advocacy priorities. Support the conceptualization, production of multimedia content, platforms and products to publicize priority issues and/or major events, including the development of a multimedia plan, using data, infographics and other visual media. This includes developing storyboards, scripts as well as identifying appropriate dissemination platforms and target audience. Support in coordinating and prioritizing the multimedia output of OCHA Afghanistan within OCHA's broader communication plans and objectives. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
