The opportunity

Our Policy and Regulatory Team (P&RE) is restructuring and expanding, which is bringing exciting new opportunities within IOSH. As a company we have a new strategy commencing in April 2023 with a continued vision of a safe and healthy world of work and a mission which includes driving action from everyone that influence and prioritise occupational safety and health standards across the world.

As the Chartered body for our profession, IOSH is a leading voice on the issues affecting safety, health, and wellbeing of people at work across industry sectors and around the world. The P&RE team represents our profession in advocating and influencing Governments, decision-makers, policymakers, standard setters, and other actors in many aspects of safety, health and wellbeing at work. The team develops and promotes policy positions that advocate for occupational safety and health (OSH), social sustainability and worker wellbeing and inputs IOSH positioning and views into global consultation opportunities and through other internal communication channels. Members of the team will work with colleagues internally and with external stakeholders to advocate, influence and engage on OSH policy, IOSH positioning, and principles of OSH.

 

About the role

As part of our team restructure, we are looking to recruit a Government and Policy Engagement Manager to join IOSH, at this exciting time in our transformational journey. The successful postholder will undertake activity with specific Government(s) and Tier 1 partner(s) globally, whilst working closely with the Policy and Regulatory Engagement team and other stakeholders internally as well as externally.

The purpose of this role is to lead on the delivery and implementation of IOSH’s Government and regulatory-related engagement activities, which includes the provision of technical information, advice and legal requirements relating to occupational safety and health, social sustainability and rights at work to Governments, policy makers and IOSH Tier 1 partners.

This will include, proactively influencing and advocating for human rights, a safe and healthy working environment and other Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, OSH standards, legal requirements, social and labour protections, decent work, IOSH policy positions, principles of OSH, advocacy and calls to action to international Governments and Policy-Makers. You will also be advocating to and working with specific Governments to provide OSH and social sustainability direction, consultation, information, evidence-based content, feedback, responsiveness and decision-making as part of their ratification of ILO Conventions, development of national frameworks and OSH National Programmes and Plans.

The successful post holder will be required to attend, engage and participate effectively in meetings within the UK and internally, and to analyse and make recommendations using sound evidence base as well as communicating and producing reports/content/presentations etc for the job to a very high standard. The approach you take must ensure IOSH remains the credible, trusted, authoritative and impartial voice of our Membership in line with the Corporate Strategy, the Policy Engagement Strategy and Plan, and the deliverables.

 

Working arrangements
We embrace smarter working practices which offer our employees the opportunity to work their hours flexibly and remotely where their roles and business needs allow. Ideally the role will require you to work between the office, which is based in Leicestershire and home, however, we welcome a discussion with the successful candidate around their preferred working pattern. Travel for business will also be required.

 

About you

You will have knowledge of occupational health and safety and social sustainability, and a sound understanding of OSH regulations, and the global political environment and cultures along with the approaches being taken. You will have proven communication and negotiation skills, along with interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate and build international relationships and engagements with ease, which will influence governments, policymakers and other stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally. You will have excellent research skills with the ability to identify, analyse and summarise complex information which is used to provide a sound evidence base to the subject matter, using analytical thinking and informing recommendations and calls to action. You will need good project management skills, be able to work autonomously, be proactive and reactive depending on the presenting situation, demonstrate our values and be a confident communicator who can advocate for IOSH viewpoints and engaging with relevant governments, policymakers, and other stakeholders, using clear, evidenced based and compelling positioning. The documents you produce will be at a very high standard and must be aligned to the needs, approach and timescales of the Government(s), Tier 1 partner(s) or other stakeholder(s).
