The UN Women Regional Office in Cairo, Egypt intends to engage professional language teacher(s) on a part-time basis as individual contractors. Working hours vary depending on the number of classes offered in a given term. A typical course schedule may include 1-2 60-minute sessions per week for a term.

Objective of the Assignment:

To promote multilingualism and to help staff develop more effective work-related communication skills in English, Arabic and French.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Teaching English, Arabic and/or French as a foreign or second language to learners at all levels and for all skills & adjusting curriculum to meet the needs of learners & organizational goals;
  • Manage the learning programme through developing lesson plans, overall schedule, materials and evaluation measures (course projects, continuous assessments tasks etc) for each class; sharing the course work in advance with students through a defined online platform;
  • Leading scheduled in-class sessions and supervising activities using a variety of instructional methods serving to enhance students' ability to learn, and creating an energetic, engaged environment; making necessary adjustments based on students’ understanding and response;
  • If necessary, conduct supplemental virtual learning sessions by using a defined online meeting platform and equipment;
  • Reinforcing learning by giving assignments and activities to students to be completed outside of the classroom;
  • Facilitating and engaging actively in class discussions, ensuring that all students are participating and interacting with one another. Using opportunities to shape discussion, and answering specific questions raised by students;
  • Maintain attendance & grading records and perform other learning and administrative tasks;
  • Display effective classroom management in organization of lessons, presentation, interaction with students, and content knowledge and relevance;
  • Carrying out needs analyses and designing special-purpose courses to meet specific needs as requested by the RO;
  • Produce monthly progress reports to be shared with RO HR unit;
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Functional Competencies

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree) or First level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in language teaching, languages, linguistics, education or related field, or relevant diploma/certification in the teaching of foreign language.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in teaching a foreign language (English, Arabic, and/or French) to adult learners, curriculum development & conducting assessments preferably in an occupational/institutional setting is required;
  • Experience in teaching learners at all levels from beginners to advanced (equivalent to UN Levels UN I, UN II, and UN III in the United Nations Language Framework) is highly desired;
  • Experience in developing specialized courses is an asset.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, Arabic, and/or French is required.
