Organizational Setting
The Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO's work in promoting sustainable forest management and providing leadership on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry, including contributions of forests and trees to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. Staff of the Division liaise with Members , civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from development of effective forest policies to forest conservation and management issues and strengthening the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Division also collects, analyses and disseminates information on the world's forest resources and on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products.
The Forestry Division coordinates FAO's work on peatlands. Since 2011, FAO supports countries through global work as well as a developing portfolio of projects in advancing sustainable peatland management for climate and biodiversity goals.
The post is located in the Forests and Climate Team of the Forestry Division (NFO) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Forestry Officer (High-carbon ecosystems: Peatlands) reports to the Forestry Officer (Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation), under the general guidance of the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader of the Forests and Climate Team, and under the overall guidance of the Director, NFO. S/he will work closely with members of the team and the Division, including the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader of the National Forest Monitoring Team, Decentralized Offices and other relevant FAO units.

Technical Focus
Technical support, capacity development and policy guidance related to high-carbon ecosystems, especially peatlands.

Key Results
Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
• Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.
• Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
• Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
• Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
• Participates on multidisciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other centres/divisions/offices and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Members such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
• Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.

Specific Functions
• Provides technical and project management support to projects related to peatland management and monitoring in developing countries, including the Congo Basin, Indonesia, Peru and others.
• Provides technical advice and liaises with partners to the Global Peatlands Initiative and other partnerships and initiatives.
• Assists peatland countries by providing science-based information for measuring and reporting to international agreements and goals.
• Provides advice and support to peatland conservation, management and restoration, including sustainable livelihoods in peatland landscapes such as paludiculture.
• Supports stakeholder engagement, dissemination, and outreach on peatlands management and monitoring.
• Contributes to the Forestry Division's work on national forest monitoring and climate action (adaptation and mitigation).
• Performs other duties as needed.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in natural resources management, forestry, land use, soils or a related field.
• Five years of relevant experience in forest or other land use management or monitoring, including of peatlands.
• Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
• Work experience in the Congo Basin or elsewhere in French-speaking and/or tropical countries would be an asset.
• Extent and relevance of experience in monitoring and management of peatlands.
• Extent and relevance of experience in capacity development on peatland measurement or management.
• Extent and relevance of experience in coordination, liaison and management of technical projects.
• Proven record of resource mobilization, stakeholder engagement as well as knowledge management and outreach.
• Extent and relevance of experience in supporting peatland work in tropical countries.
• Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of French would be a strong asset.
