The incumbent will be supervised by the UNEP Brazil Office Representative and will work at the House of United Nations in Brazil – Sérgio Vieira de Mello Complex, in Brasília, from Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

 
Duties and Responsibilities

 
The objective of this term of reference is to hire a Communication Advisor to contribute with proper communication and dissemination of UNEP’s messages, programmes, initiatives and reports, including the creation and edition of content and design assets. Under the direct guidance of the Brazil Office Representative, Communication Advisor’s tasks and responsibilities include:
 
 
  • Liaise with UNEP Headquarter, the Regional Office’s team and national stakeholders to coordinate activities in the Communication unit in Brazil, including the organization and implementation of online and in-person events, launches, activations, coverages and special campaigns and pushes, also supporting with travel arrangements and preparation of agendas. 
  • Contribute with communications guidance; editting and development of graphic design and audiovisual materials for the local and global website and social networks; maintenance of records, information database and audiovisual library; update of mailing lists; preparation of newsletters, among other tasks. 
  • Engage in strategic communications planning and processes to proper communicate and disseminate UNEP’s messages, programmes, initiatives and reports. 
  • Maintain website and social network platforms updated, regularly providing KPI reports; 
  • Regularly communicate, plan and execute activities aligned with Communications; 
  • Liaise with key partners and stakeholders (projects, UN agencies, NGOs and other counterparts) for dissemination at sub-regional and national level of UNEP´s activities; 
  • Foster relevant partnerships to strengthen a compliance culture and contribute to the knowledge sharing to plastic pollution issues; 
  • Research and analysis of statistical and general data from internal and external sources related to Communication; also contributing to the preparation of reports, project documents, presentations and working papers namely in environment-related sectors; 
  • Contribute to the Communication teams with administrative processes; 
  • Translate news, stories, videos, briefings, factsheets, brochure and other communication products in both English and Portuguese when required; 
  • Translate from English to Portuguese communication content or documents in general, use by the Representative or any UNEP Country Office Brazil staff member, training and other purposes. 
  • Translate from Portuguese to English documents for publication, use by the Representative or any UNEP Country Office Brazil staff member, training and other purposes; 
  • Revise texts in any of the two languages mentioned above developed by and for the Communication Unit or the Brazil Country Office; 
  • Performing other related duties as required, including editing, terminological work, creation of translation memories; 
  • Performing other clerical tasks as required. Supporting other activities of the Country Office as requested; 
  • Liaise with key partners and stakeholders (projects, UN agencies, NGOs and other counterparts) for dissemination at sub-regional and national level of UNEP´s activities, including outreach to national and regional media for placement of content, interviews and other opportunities;

Required Skills and Experience

 
Academic Background Requirements:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications Studies, Public Relations, Design and other related fields is required.

 

Mandatory Work Experience:
  • Minimum of 6 (six) years of progressive experience in the field of communication and translation is required.

 

Desirable Work Experience:

  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software package, in handling web-based management systems and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages. 
  • Good knowledge of online software for social media and communications, such as Canva, Mailchimp, Mlabs. 
  • Previous experience within UN System is preferable. 
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro. 
  • Experience with translations of documents in Portuguese and English.

 

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Portuguese is required.
  • Confident in Spanish is an asset.

 

Expected Results of Services:

All services to be performed under this Term of Reference will have a direct impact on the development and implementation of the UNEP Brazil Office.

 

Legislative Authority:

The contract will be governed by United Nations Environment Programme rules and procedures.

 

Indicative Level of Remuneration

UNDP SC 3-5 

The value presented on UNDP’s Service Contract table refers to the gross salary to be paid to the Contractor, not being included the amount related to the payment of Income Tax and others related Taxes, which shall be of sole responsibility of the Contractor. Under SC contract, the Local Social Security (INSS), Health and Life Insurance costs are fully covered by the organization through the corresponding funding source. Payment under the SC is based on services satisfactorily provided in accordance with the terms of reference under the SC.

 

Travel Involved

Costs with missions/travels in order to meet the objectives and results stated in this Term of Reference are not included in the total amount mentioned above and shall be covered by the Project, if necessary.
