Mission

Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting respect for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence. Geneva Call’s mission is to ensure that armed groups and de facto authorities (AGDA) respect International Humanitarian Law and basic humanitarian principles in the areas where they fight or they control.  Geneva call ? Afghanistan is aiming to develop a research on mapping of madrasas across Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Role

Overall activitiesThe researcher will lead and develop a comprehensive study on Madrasas across Afghanistan and Pakistan, mapping the most influential Madrasas, i.e. influential scholars, schools of thought, curiculum (key teachings on social norms and behavior), number of students and teachers per Madrasas, role in the education system, political role of madrasas.
The main purpose of this research is to inform Geneva Call’s future engagement strategy and programming in the region. Furthermore the research will aim at providing donors and aid actors with a stronger understanding of the degre of influence of madrasas on society and how the madrasa system works alongside the formal and informal education system in Afghanistan.
 
The specific research questions will be refined further upon consultations with the selected research for confidentiality purposes. 
This research process will require desk-based research and field research in selected locations. The research process will encompass:
  • Initial consultation with Geneva Call's team
  • In-depth desk research
  • Field research involving mixed qualitative and quantitative data collection methods
  • Thorough data analysis, interpretation, and data visualization
  • Submission of a draft report
  • Incorporation of Geneva Call's team feedback into the final report
 
The research project will be conducted based on a mutually agreed work plan. The timeline will be developed in consultation with Geneva Call's team, ensuring comprehensive coverage of research activities.
 
The lead consultant can either work individually or assemble a small team as per their discretion.
 

Deliverables

1.Outline of the Research Proposal and Methodology to be shared and discussed with GC Team
2.First draft of research report to be reviewed by GC team
3.Submission of final research report (incl. pictures)
 

Tentative deadlines

1.2 weeks from the start of the consultancy
2.6 weeks from the start of the consultancy
3.8 weeks from the start of the consultancy
 

Main qualifications

Education and experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, Social Sciences or similar.
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant subject is a plus.
  • Experience conducting similar research studies, preferably in conflict or post-conflict regions.
 
Qualifications / Personal skills: 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and communicate sensitive information.
  • Ability to work under pressure with short deadlines.
  • Sensitivity to/understanding of political and conflict dynamics;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
 
Languages
  • English C1-C2
 
Technical skills: 
  • Excellent understanding of the context of Afghanistan
  • Strong network of local researchers and key informants. 
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, quality written content in English.
  • Solid analytical and research skills.
  • Good understanding of Sharia Law would be a plus.
