Overview of position

Under the overall guidance of Senior Project Assistant (Mental Health and Psychosocial Support/MHPSS) and the direct supervision of the Medical Officer/MHU Team Leader, and technical supervision of Programme Coordinator (MHPSS), the incumbent will actively engage in the implementation of MHPSS activities including social considerations in basic services and security, strengthening community and family supports, focused non-specialized services and ensure referral to specialized services, as required. S/he is expected to carry out her/his duties in accordance with strictest ethical standards and with due respect for gender and socio-cultural sensitivities.

Role objectives

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

1.Deliver basic counselling sessions (Individual and/or group counselling) to the affected people that is identified by or through IOM Health Team as an integrated approach.

2.Implement tailored psychosocial support activities for the displaced and migrant populations in the designated locations, in collaboration with MHU and ensure that the implementation of social, religious, and educational/vocational activities are culturally appropriate.

3.Assist in the identification of psychosocial needs, and proposition needed interventions to reduce risks and increase the resilience capacity within the displaced and migrant populations.

4.Organize and lead support groups, focus group discussions and community awareness sessions and contribute to development of key messages related to MHPSS awareness raising.

5.Support in delivering training or workshops tailored for increased awareness on MHPSS concerns and remedies.

6.Conduct on-going monitoring, evaluation and reporting of the psychological conditions of the affected individual and provide periodic reports of MHPSS activities conducted in the designated areas including reports and statistics on monthly basis.

7.Coordinate with Senior Project Assistant (MHPSS) and Medical Officer/MHU Team Leader on cases requiring higher level interventions or referral to mental health specialized services.

8.Coordinate with Regional MHPSS Technical Working Group and other relevant stakeholders at provincial levels.

9.Maintain confidentiality of all beneficiaries and internal information.

Further information


  • University Degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Works, Psychiatric Nursing, or related Social field from an accredited academic institution with one-year of relevant professional experience; or
  • Diploma in the above fields with two-years of relevant professional experience; or
  • One-year Certificate in counselling or professional accreditation from a recognized psychological or counselling association-society with three-years of relevant professional experience.


  • Experience in providing basic counselling sessions for individual or group in a crisis and or post-crisis settings.
  • Experience working in humanitarian sector is an asset, specifically in MHPSS programs.
  • Good knowledge of community engagement and community awareness methods and tools.
  • Experience in supporting and coordinating with health team.
  • Experience in training and supervision of scalable psychological interventions is an asset.

Fluency in Dari and Pashto

Working knowledge of English
