Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality, and in all deliberations and agreements linked to the 2030 Agenda. The entity works to position gender equality as fundamental to the Sustainable Development Goals, and a more inclusive world.

UN-WOMEN supports its partners (governments, civil society organizations, private sector, Sister UN Agencies and international NGOs) in implementing the commitments made by States on gender equality.

UN Women Burundi's Strategic Note 2024-2027 aligns with UN Women's Global Strategic Plan 2022-2025, the National Development Plan 2018-2027 reinforced by the National Program for the Capitalization of Peace, Social Stability and the Promotion of Economic Growth (PNCP 2021-2027), the National Gender Policy (NGP) 2012-2025 and UNSC Resolution 1325, UNSDCF (2023-2027) and the United Nations Resilience Framework. It captures the triple mandate of UN WOMEN (Normative, Coordination and Programmatic) aimed at supporting government and partners to achieve lasting results for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, building on its comparative advantages.

UN Women's work in Burundi focuses on 4 priority themes:

  1. Governance and Participation in Public Life.
  2. Women's Economic Empowerment.
  3. Ending Violence against Women and Girls.
  4. Women Peace & Security and Humanitarian Action

Reporting to the Programme Management Specialist and in close collaboration with all the Programme Units, the International Intern in Gender and Humanitarian Action contributes to the effective management of UN Women Programmes in the Burundi Country Office by providing technical assistance and inputs to programme design, formulation, implementation, and evaluation. 

Overall supervision will be done by the Country Representative.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Women Burundi is looking for a full-time International Intern to support the implementation of Burundi Country Office Bi-annual Work Plan 2024-2025 in the perspective of Gender in Humanitarian Action. Under the supervision of the Programme Management Specialist, the intern should take part in the following assignments:

  1. Support in the Design and implementation of the programme strategies on Gender in Humanitarian Action
  • Assist to Design and formulate concept notes, programme/project proposals and initiatives on Gender in Humanitarian Action;
  • Draft inputs to strategy documents, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), briefs, policy dialogue and other documents related to Gender in Humanitarian Action;
  • Provide technical inputs to concept notes and programme proposals on humanitarian response, ensuring gender is mainstreamed;
  • Assist in gender assessments, gender analysis, and ensuring gender is mainstreamed in humanitarian and emergency plans and activities across all clusters
  • Provide inputs on operational documents such as the Standards Operating Procedures, plans, monitoring and evaluation plans etc to ensure gender issues are fully addressed
  • Support monitoring and reporting of the programme to ensure gender disaggregated data and analysis

2. Support strengthening partnerships with Government, CSOs, stakeholders, regional/ international actors and development partners, UN Agencies

  •  Assist to maintain alliances and strategic partnerships for the advancement of gender in humanitarian action;
  • Contribute inputs to updates and briefs on country development situation to be used by government, stakeholders, UN Women Country Office, Regional Office and HQ;

3. Support the resource mobilization strategy for humanitarian action in the Burundi Country Office

  • Participate in the implementation, monitoring and periodic updating of the gender sensitive resource mobilization strategy on humanitarian action;
  • Provide support to the country office in mobilizing resources for the implementation of engendered humanitarian action;
  • Assist in Research and analyze information on donors and their respective interests.

4. Support in the advocacy of humanitarian action through inter-agency coordination

  • Assist the UN Women Representative and on inter-agency coordination on humanitarian action including through the Humanitarian Country Team;
  • Work closely with, and provide advice to Inter-cluster Committee, national bodies and interagency groups that influence national policies related to humanitarian action;
  • Support specific efforts in mainstreaming gender interagency clusters of disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts
  • Foster the engagement and participation of gender focused local organizations and civil society networks in humanitarian coordination mechanisms.

  • The intern will have and increased understanding of UN Women triple mandate with opportunity to implement key Programme strategies including the Humanitarian Strategy.
  • The intern will be provided with adequate learning opportunities and exposure on UN Women Burundi Programmes and work, especially with regards to the Gender in Humanitarian Action and with a wide range of the partners working in different field.
  • The intern will be introduced to the larger range of partnership work and the various documents, regarding Governance and Women Leadership and Participation, Women, Peace and Security, Women Economic Empowerment, Ending Violence against Women and Girls in the humanitarian context.
  • The Intern will also be provided with internal and external networking and broader learning opportunities, various programs and learning seminars;
  • The Intern will have increased understanding of UN Women’s work and the UN system;
  • The Intern will learn to work as a team member in a multicultural setting

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines in Gender/Women’s studies, conflict and peace studies, humanitarian, gender and disaster risk reduction, communication or related discipline at the university level;
  • Master’s degree students are preferred.

Meet one of the following:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a two-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French are required ;
  • Working knowledge of English is distinct advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
