Are you passionate about international cooperation, global governance, or building a career in the multilateral system? The United Nations New York Immersion Programme, offered by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), presents a rare opportunity to step inside the heart of global diplomacy — and we think it’s one worth exploring.

What Is the New York Immersion Programme?

The UN New York Immersion Programme is a five-day, in-person field visit designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of how the United Nations operates in one of its most important hubs — New York City. The programme combines expert lectures, interactive workshops, multilateral conferences, private guided tours, and career development sessions to offer a holistic immersion into the world of the UN.

Located at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, this experience gives you direct access to UN institutions, global policy practitioners, and representatives from organizations such as:

  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

  • United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

  • United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

  • UN Women

  • United Nations Youth Office alongside other key UN actors.

Who Is It For?

The programme is open to a wide range of participants who are eager to deepen their understanding of international affairs and multilateral diplomacy. Whether you are:

  • A professional in the public or private sector,

  • Working within non-governmental organizations or think tanks,

  • A student or academic,

  • Or someone from another background with a strong interest in global cooperation,

this immersion offers valuable exposure to the functions, values, and people driving the work of the United Nations. No prior UN experience is required — just curiosity and commitment.

To ensure a high-quality learning environment, each edition is limited to 30 participants and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will leave the programme with a deeper grasp of key multilateral topics, strengthened diplomatic skills, and practical insights that can support career progression in international organizations. Highlights include:

  • Foundational knowledge of the UN system and its agencies

  • Training in core diplomatic skills, such as negotiation, communication, and leadership

  • Networking opportunities with UN personnel and fellow participants

  • Career sessions focused on pathways in international affairs, including interview preparation and career planning for roles within the UN and broader multilateral ecosystem

At the end of the programme, participants receive a UNITAR Certificate of Completion, a testament to their enhanced understanding of UN processes and international diplomacy.

Programme Editions & Registration

Two editions are offered for 2026:
