6 questions to one of the DFS campaign's recruiters - read his tips

Ashraf Eissa (Spokesperson at UNAMID) is currently serving in a UN Field Mission. Impactpool got the opportunity to ask Ashraf a few questions as part of the UN Peace Operations recruitment campaign. Ashraf joined the UN at mid-career after many years of teaching in universities and working in government and strategic communication. “- Leaving the taken for granted comforts of a modern city like London and moving into the field was not only an eye opener, but also makes one realize how much strength they can gain, how much satisfaction they can get from helping others and how enriching an experience working in a field mission can be… Looking back, I wouldn’t have missed this for the world!” . Hi Ashraf, How are you doing?

I am fine thank you. I am very much looking forward to this campaign and I do hope that we will be able to find many good arabic speaking candidates.

Yes, sure lets hope for that. Impactpool has a broad pool of arabic speaking members and followers, so I am positive that we will succeed. Thank you for taking time to talk to us today about this important campaign. I have compiled a few questions that I believe could help applicants interested in applying for a position at the UN Peace Operations. If you don't mind, let's jump into the first question.

1) How would you describe UN Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, what do you do?

Peacekeeping and Special Political Mission are part of the UN Peace Operations and the UN's Security Council's objective to maintain international peace and security across the world. This is done through efforts to prevent or mitigate the start, escalation and impact of armed conflict as well as early resolution of political crises that could lead to war.

The overarching aim of peacekeeping is to protect civilians, especially women and children, who are caught up in conflict zones and help them recover and rebuild peace once the war is over.
While this part of the UN has occasionally been subject to criticisms, it remains the only tool available to the international community to prevent, mitigate and resolve conflicts. And until the world comes up with another tool, the women and men who work in Peacekeeping remain held in high esteem for the noble cause they are serving.

2) What are the professional profiles you are looking for to the field missions in Yemen/Libya/Syria?

First of all, we are looking for the best women and men professionals we can attract from across the world! We are looking for global talent with the right qualifications and personal traits to work in challenging conflict or post-conflict environments. For this, we are casting our net as widely as possible with emphasis on quality!

3) What are the profiles you are looking for your roles in a field mission?

  • Professionals who have a good working knowledge of spoken Arabic and a high proficiency level of English. While we are looking for suitably qualified candidates whose native tongue could be Arabic, we are equally targeting those who speak Arabic as a second or foreign language.
  • Individuals who have the capacity to adapt and who own a good level of internal resilience which would make them adept to working in hardship locations or remote areas where basic mod-cons may not be regularly available.
  • The jobs we are currently offering in Political and Civil Affairs at the P-3 and P-4 levels are best suited to qualified mid-career women and men who may be considering a new challenge in their career and life paths.
  • The UN is committed to implementing gender balance and mainstreaming throughout its operations. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply for these positions.

4) Many of your positions are rosters. What is a roster?

A roster is a list of pre-approved candidates to be assigned in field missions on positions they were cleared for.
It is very much like a pre-approved credit card!

5) Is there an assessment to get on a roster?

Yes. All shortlisted candidates will go through a formal interview, conducted in English and Arabic, where they will be asked to provide evidence from their experience to illustrate the competencies listed in the job description. 6) What happens once on the roster?

Once Rostered, candidates shall receive notifications when positions which they are cleared for are advertised in UN field Missions. They are then invited to put in an application if they are interested in this specific job. By then, there is no more formal assessment as they are already rostered and they can be quickly deployed once selected.
