- “I never planned for a UN career, when I am looking back I realize I was at the right place at the right time.” says Herbert Pechek over a phone line from Mogadishu, Somalia. In 2000, Herbert worked in New York in the private sector. He accepted a 6 months assignment in East Timor at the UN Peacekeeping mission and after a completed assignment he planned to return to Austria. It become more than 6 months, in fact this is his 17th year at UN Peacekeeping missions and he never returned to Austria as planned.
