About UNESCO
UNESCO is a multi-thematic, UN Specialized Agency whose areas of competence center on activities and projects across five major programmes, namely: Education, Natural Sciences, Social & Human Sciences, Culture and Communication & Information.
In addition to these five programmatic areas, UNESCO also has two established global priorities which are Africa and Gender Equality.
The Organization has a rich programmatic mandate which it pursues on a global scale through its headquarters located in Paris, France and a network of over 53 Field Offices and Institutes.
Women in Science at UNESCO
Just 28% of researchers are women. Gender equality is a crucial means to promote scientific and technological excellence.
UNESCO is working towards empowerment of women in science, through various initiatives such as the SAGA (STEM and gender advancement) project or the L’Oréal-UNESCO Award rewarding exceptional women who have made great advances in scientific research.
Women Staff in UNESCO
UNESCO is among the top five UN agencies who achieved parity at professional level and higher.
As at December 2018, UNESCO has maintained the overall gender balance of its staff (55% female staff), and 51% at Director level.
UNESCO aims at gender balance achieved at all levels in the organization, including at senior level.
By enhancing women's professional development through dedicated training initiatives, creating a gender equality conscious workplace, we will keep maintaining the gender parity in UNESCO.
