Written Assessments are tests that applicants could potentially be asked to do before or on the same day of their interviews. Many International Organizations use this as a tool during the selection process to find multiple pieces of evidence of fit from the applicant.

Types of written test include:

  1. Aptitude tests (behavioral)
  2. Competencies (creativity, problem solving, analytical thinking, communication skills: writing a simple essay/press release to assess grammar, punctuation and relevancy)
  3. Hard Skills Assessment

Note: Just because you meet the minimum requirements does not mean that you are in a competitive position. Read more about it in this article: job requirements funnel,

Thus, it is very important to prepare well for assessments and interview processes.

Written Assessment Tests are rated anonymously by a group of panel experts and serves the purpose of either:

An eliminatory assessment - to decide whether the applicant meets the minimum requirements to move forward to the next stage of the screening process or

A complimentary assessment - to shortlisted/ interviewed candidates that would be  scored by their performances at each stage and the one with the best score gets the job opening. We have put together this article about recruiter notes during interviews and how does the panel evaluate each candidate?

So how can you tell if you are given the assessment as part of a complimentary or eliminatory process?

Specific types of questions and which one to expect depending on the role that you will apply for

Sample questions for each question type

Exercise questions using job descriptions, matched with potential questions based on the operational context of the role
