Functional Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Chief of Staff, the incumbent will provide substantive senior-level support on member state engagement. The responsibilities of the Programme Manager include: 

1. Country Engagement
  • Contribute to the design and development of targeted strategies focused on countries or regions that may be assigned;
  • Ensure country strategies leverage opportunities to advance the SG’s climate action strategy;
  • Build strong and diverse networks to support the execution of the countries strategies.
2. Coordinate with UN, Member States and other Stakeholders 
  • Contribute to the development of a strategy to ensure a clear SG position on the topic to guide CAT and other UN entity engagement;
  • Stay abreast of key Member State activity such as negotiated outcomes and formal meetings, identifying risks and opportunities to the SG’s climate action strategy.
3. Manage Strategic Initiatives 
  • Support implementation of the adaptation and resilience deliverables in the SG’s climate action strategy including through developing a strategy to secure new and more ambitious commitments;
  • Contribute to the development of the strategy on priority adaptation and resilience areas;
  • Ensure successful follow-up delivery, growth and implementation of the highest impact initiatives launched on adaptation and resilience.
4. Support to EOSG and Manage Partnerships 
  • Support development of recommendations, briefing notes, key messages and inputs into speeches for SG and DSG engagements with governments, private sector, development finance institutions and other relevant partners, with a focus on achieving a breakthrough on adaptation and resilience;
  • Monitor trends and innovations in adaptation finance and implementation;
  • Support management of partnerships and coalitions to secure progress on priorities;
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:
  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree), preferably in Environmental Policy or International Relations or other relevant fields is required. 
  • Two (2) additional years of relevant work experience, in combination with a relevant first-level university (bachelor’s degree or equivalent), may substitute for the requirement of a master’s degree
Experience:
  • At least five (5) years of relevant professional experience in programme and/or project management.
  • Experience coordinating climate initiatives and/or coalition building. 
Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
