BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst
humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40
countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm
to home.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: At the NYC Resettlement, Asylum and Integration (RAI) office, the
School Success Team helps newly arrived families to navigate the NYC public school system. In
addition to providing school enrollment assistance and academic coaching, the team is looking to
begin an afterschool program focused on providing social emotional learning (SEL) opportunities
to refugee/newcomer youth. The Social Emotional Learning Intern (SEL Intern) will work directly
with the School Success Coordinator, helping with the management and facilitation of the new
program.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the guidance of the School Success Coordinator, the SEL Intern will
work on the following:
• Assisting with and/or facilitating SEL activities and presentations in partner schools for
groups of 15-25 youth ages 5-11, 1-2 times weekly
• Administrative assistance with program planning, e.g. coordinating with partner schools,
family outreach, lesson planning, facilitating paperwork processes, researching
community resources (mental health, after school), etc.
• Co-managing a team of 2-5 SEL volunteers
• Supporting Monitoring and Evaluation efforts to measure the efficacy of the program when
applicable
• Additional tasks as requested by the School Success Coordinator

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Interns will gain experience providing educational programming and services directly to
refugee/newcomer youth.
2. Interns will deepen their academic and practical understanding of social emotional
learning, especially in regards to how it intersects with mental health/psychosocial
support and refugee education.
3. Interns will develop their capacity in project management and logistics, specifically within
a non-profit context
