OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

In July 2023, the Royal Commission for AlUla and UNESCO signed a project agreement "Heritage and creativity for AlUla's sustainable development", which aims to leverage the heritage of AlUla in all its forms, to enhance the understanding of its significance, and to contribute to its safeguarding through the transmission of AlUla's history and culture by narrating its story and empowering the bearer communities. By doing so, the project will aim at enhancing sustainable tourism through the promotion of culture, thereby directly benefitting Local stakeholders. The project intends to provide technical assistance and capacity building, develop international networks and enhance visibility for cultural heritage and creativity in view of the sustainable development of AlUla. More specifically, it will address the role that heritage and creativity can play in building sustainable cities and promoting a culture-engaged, people-centred development model for AlUla.

 

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture, the general supervision of the Director of World Heritage, and the direct supervision of the Head of the Arab States unit of the World Heritage Centre, the incumbent will serve as Project Officer, providing technical expertise and coordination to support the activities in the field of World Heritage. In particular, s/he is expected to perform the following responsibilities:

  • Ensure planning, implementation and monitoring of activities foreseen under Output 1 of the Project ‘Enhancing World Heritage storytelling for communities and visitor experience’, which is aimed at the effective enhancement of visitor experience and ensuring sustainable site management.
  • Establish, manage and monitor contracts and relationships with consultants and implementing partners covering the range of expertise in the field of visitor interpretation and presentation, as well as sustainable tourism and site management.
  • Organize stakeholder meetings, capacity building workshops, knowledge-sharing and peer­ Learning activities and awareness raising events in the field of site interpretation and presentation, as well as sustainable tourism and site management.
  • Develop relevant project monitoring and evaluation tools and resources to support the implementation of Output 1 of the project and related activities.
  • Liaise and facilitate consultations with dedicated entities at the Royal Commission for AlUla, relevant government authorities, partners, suppliers, individual experts and Local communities as required and necessary.
  • Support the overall Project Coordinator to plan and coordinate activities relating to the implementation of the project, according to the established workplan.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports of the project as needed.
  • Coordinate and facilitate information sharing amongst stakeholders and partners; prepare briefings, reports, communication and other relevant documents and materials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education
  • Advanced University Degree (Masters or equivalent) in the field of culture, heritage conservation and management, social and human sciences or a related field.

 

Work experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience in the field of culture, safeguarding of cultural heritage or a related field, such as heritage management and cultural policy, of which preferably 2 years acquired in an international environment.

  • Experience in working on cultural projects in Saudi Arabia or in the region.
Skills and Competencies
  • Familiarity with the work and general functioning of the United Nations system or an international organization.

 

Languages
  • Knowledge of writing and speaking Arabic.
  • Knowledge of French.

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 99 451 US $.
