OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The Pre-Media Unit is in the Documents Management Section of the Division of Conferences, Languages and Documents, in the Sector for Administration and Management. The Pre-Media Unit's primary responsibilities concern the direction and management of visual design, multimedia and graphic design services for all UNESCO publications, documents, large-format and promotional materials for conferences, programme sectors and governing bodies of UNESCO; and for advising clients on the technical aspects of such services. The Unit is also responsible for the management of outsourced desktop publishing (DTP) work that cannot be processed in-house.

 

Under the overall authority of the Director of the Division of Conferences, Languages and Documents, and the direct supervision of the Chief of Pre-Media Unit, the incumbent is required to interpret the client's vision and transform this into a finished or pre-finished product, optimizing the layout, typography and design, to ensure a printable or electronic version of a production mainly in Arab Language. S/he is required to be creative while at the same time respecting the graphic charter reflecting the institutional design of the Organization.

 

The incumbent will be expected to perform the following essential duties:

  •  As a member of a team, contribute to the production of documents and publications. Provide creative formatting, design, and layout services, including content input from multiple digital files using Adobe Creative Suite for different type of products: Brochures, leaflets, publications, banners, roll-ups, stickers, posters, visiting cards, diplomas/certificates, etc.
  • Participate in briefs with clients and other central services to create layout, typography and designs that correspond to the clients' request taking into consideration the graphic charter of UNESCO and typographical and design standards. Propose different options to the client, always taking into consideration the technical description made prior to the commencement of the production and not deviating from this without consultation.
  • Review and correct files, load fonts, inspect graphics and prepare files for printing or web-publishing. Perform conversion/export of data from native files and /or pdf to and from other software, i.e., pdf to Word, PDF to Filp book, Excel to Adobe illustrator, PDF to ePub, etc.
  • Assist and guide external Desktop publishing Operators/Designers with temporary assistance or service contracts on UNESCO policies and graphic charts, standard practices and on the electronic filing and transmission of documents. Keep all job folders up to date on the dedicated server and follow all guidelines for archiving files.
  • Keep abreast with the latest trends in Desktop Publishing field and related technologies.

Education

  • Completed secondary, technical, or vocational school including qualifications in graphic design or related field.

 

Work experience

  • At least (5) years of relevant professional experience in visual communications, graphic design for web and for print.

 

Skills/Competencies

  • Expertise in graphic design, and layout design.
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • An eye for detail and latest visual design standards.
  • Organised, flexible and able to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities.

 

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic  (spoken and written).
  • Good knowledge English or French. 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Skills and Competencies

  •  Knowledge of typography, colour, and production.

 

Languages

  • Knowledge of Spanish.

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 43 734 Euros.
