Job Description

The IRC’s Emergencies & Humanitarian Action Unit (EHAU) oversees IRC’s global acute emergency preparedness and response activities. The mission of the EHAU is to expand and improve IRC’s ability to help affected communities survive in acute emergencies and hard to reach contexts by investing in people, systems, and solutions to complex humanitarian challenges.  The EHAU team achieves this mission through ongoing rigorous risk analysis, investing in capacity strengthening of frontline humanitarians, partnership with local actors, offering collaborative support and technical assistance to teams working in emergencies and hard to reach places, and deploying and supporting world class emergency response staff as they help people affected by acute crisis situations.
The IRC’s Emergency Surge Team (EST) is a roster of esteemed and highly qualified humanitarian professionals who deploy on short notice emergency contexts to support the IRC’s mission. Members of the EST provide specialist support where talent is most needed for short-term deployments of up to three months. The EST is a flexible employment opportunity for staff, requiring members to be available for deployments only 50% of the year (with opportunities for additional deployments if incumbent is interested).
Members of the EST who specialize in emergencies are deployed to support either existing country programs in their emergency response, or to initiate a new program in a crisis zone. The overall responsibility of the team is to design, develop, and manage the IRC’s on-site humanitarian response, allowing us to meet the immediate needs of the affected population rapidly and effectively.
Nutrition programming at IRC: Our overall objective is to protect children from all forms of undernutrition so that they are well-nourished. We increase access to, and continuity of, treatment for acute malnutrition through in-patient and out-patient care. Using evidence from our cutting edge research, we’re simplifying diagnosis and treatment and bringing care closer to home. We’re also delivering high-impact preventive services through infant and young child feeding programs, infant feeding support for breastfed and non-breastfed infants, cash vouchers, complementary feeding promotion, and micro-nutrient supplementation and fortification while also investing in nutrition integration across health, education, early childhood development, child protection and economic programming.
