UNAMA was established in 2002 as a Political/ Peacebuilding Mission, exceptionally) directed and supported by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).

Context

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) assists the people of Afghanistan in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development in the country. UNAMA’s current mandate comprises the following priorities: the provision of good offices; support for the organization of future elections; strengthening capacity in the protection and promotion of human rights including the protection of children affected by armed conflict and prevention of child recruitment; support for gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment; the coordination and facilitation of humanitarian assistance; and support for Afghanistan’s development and governance priorities, including the rule of law, transitional justice as an essential component of the ongoing peace process, budget execution and the fight against corruption throughout the country; The Security Council also recognized that the renewed mandate of UNAMA is in support of Afghanistan’s full assumption of leadership and ownership in the security, governance and development areas,

Task description

UNAMA Medical Section is the primary provider of reliable, client-oriented, cost-efficient, and prompt primary health care to all personnel from participating UN entities. The Section aims to protect and promote staff health, sustain, and improve their working capacity, contribute to a safe and healthy working environment, and promote the adaptation of work to the capabilities of staff, taking account of their health status. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the UN Volunteer nurse will undertake the following tasks: Specific duties • Attend the UNAMA medical clinic on a full-time basis. • Supervise and coordinate nursing activities in JMS. • Provide hands-on care to patients by administering medications, managing intravenous lines, observing, and monitoring patients' conditions, maintaining records, and communicating with doctors. • Provide health promotion, counseling, and education. Interpret patient information and make critical decisions about needed actions. • Evaluate nursing activities to ensure patient care, staff relations, and efficiency of service. • Observe nursing care and visit patients to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed, and treatment is administered following the physician's instructions. • Accompany physicians on rounds and keep them informed of special orders concerning patients. • Identify the learning needs of nursing staff and design training programs for skill development. • Direct preparation and maintenance of patients' clinical records. • Inspect rooms and wards for cleanliness and comfort. • Serve as a role model for nursing employees and demonstrate leadership ability and management skills through fair decision-making. • Ensure medical equipment and consumables are available and ready for use at all times. • Support activities of the Forward Surgical Team and Aeromedical Evacuation Team. • Collaborate with all nurses and paramedics of the JMS and MERT. General Duties • Perform other related duties to the above assignment as requested by the CMO. • Support day-to-day operations by liaising with the various components of the mission and the local healthcare providers. • Participate in meetings arranged on health-related issues as and when assigned by the CMO. • This position is to provide support to the UN. It is not a humanitarian position requiring interaction with the local population.
