Job Description

Job Overview: The Housing Specialist secures and coordinates the furnishing of safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for newly arriving refugees and provides related logistical and client education support. 
Major Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • Work with clients to understand their housing needs and to explain IRC provided R&P housing services.
  • Identify and secure safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for newly arriving refugees in compliance with established program requirements.
  • Conduct ongoing outreach to current and potential landlords and property managers, building strong working relationships with the goal of increasing access to housing for refugee families and to coordinate client home repair requests as needed.  Collaborate effectively with coworkers and partner organizations to support a positive resettlement experience.
  • Coordinate with Operations team to monitor housing inventory and ensure necessary supplies are available for new arrivals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Housing and the Operations Teams
  • Coordinate logistics of housing set-ups including arranging utility hook-ups, facilitating lease signings and renewals, arranging payments, and conducting home safety inspections.
  • Move clients into their new home and provide orientation to ensure clients understand how to successfully navigate their new home. Provide follow up support and facilitate communication with landlords as needed.
  • Satisfy recordkeeping requirements.
  • Use personal, insured vehicle and/or public transportation (where available) to travel and transport clients and materials as needed throughout the service delivery area.
  • May train and lead the activities of support staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Undergraduate degree preferred, or relevant lived experience. 
  • A minimum of 1 year work experience with similar populations in the human services field is ideal.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to set and maintain healthy professional boundaries with clients.
  • Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member.
  • Commitment to promoting participation, self-reliance, sustainability, equity and human dignity.
  • Capacity to respond to adversity with empathy, compassion, and a solution-oriented mindset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), internet applications and relational database use. Familiarity with the Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel frequently throughout the service delivery area.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is conducted in a standard office work environment with considerable time spent in the community, primarily in neighborhoods where clients live and work. 
  • This role entails periodic travel in and around the Denver metro area to attend meetings, carry out the responsibilities outlined above, and represent the IRC with donors, partners, and vendors.
  • Hours outside of typical office hours, including weekends and evenings, are occasionally required.
