Contract/Level: LICA-5
Duration: From 1 May 2024 to 31 December 2024 (with possibility of extension)

1. General Background

Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, UNHCR reopened its office in the Dominican Republic to provide coordination and humanitarian response to the thousands of Haitians, many of whom were unaccompanied and separated children, who arrived in search of international protection. In July 2011, the UNHCR office in the Dominican Republic began its work with the population affected by the 168-13 ruling with nationality issues that extended UNHCR's presence in the Dominican Republic. The majority of refugees and asylum seekers are Haitian and Venezuelan nationals, as well as a smaller number of extra-continental cases from Afghanistan, Colombia, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Syria, etc.

2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment

Child protection is recognized as global organizational priority for UNHCR. Dedicated child protection positions are needed to provide technical support to improve UNHCR’s operational capacity to deliver effective protection to children, adolescents and youth of concern.

The Senior Child Protection Assistant also ensures that persons of concern under area of responsibility are involved with the Office in making decisions that affect them, whether in accessing their rights or in identifying appropriate solutions to their problems. To achieve this, the incumbent will need to build and maintain effective interfaces with communities of concern, local authorities and protection and assistance partners.
