Mission and objectives

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

Context

UNICEF India has launched the UReport platform to amplify the voices of citizens to create positive change in their communities. U-report is a mobile phone-based technology that provides a forum of opinion and information sharing for children, adolescents and adults. Using a crowd-sourcing approach to initiate a virtual dialogue with the members (‘U-Reporters’) the ultimate aim of the program is to stimulate citizen-led and adolescent/youth-led development. Once the information is collected the data is instantly analyzed. The information is subsequently utilized in advocacy work across all media channels, many UNICEF programs and through partner engagement. UReporters will be engaged via social media and will be asked via weekly polls, quizzes, challenges, to share their ideas, opinions and feedback about issues that matter most to them. U-Report has evolved into a powerful source of information to improve service delivery and increase youth engagement in policy dialogues with about 300,000 U-Reporters in India (https://india.ureport.in ). The UReport platform is present in over 30 other countries around the world with more than 7 million U-Reporters globally. (http://ureport.in) U-Reporters are recruited through partnerships with youth organizations and other civil society organizations. A U-Report Steering Committee / Working group comprising of UNICEF programme teams, government partners, youth organizations and young people will be responsible for planning and supervising the scale up of the UReport platform in India.
