The overall purpose of the role 

The position Project – Agro Officer is based in Jowhar. As part of the implementation of food security and livelihood activities under the Riverine & Pastoral Food System Strengthening (RFSS), the staff will monitor all aspects of project implementation, including community mobilization, identify and selection of beneficiaries, registration project beneficiaries, M&E, documentation, standardization, in compliance with DRC and donor’s policies and procedures. The staff will always consult closely with his/her supervisor (Livelihood team leader), The Country Ecrec coordinator and the Area Manager.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead GVCA and CAAP assessments!
  • Train farmers on climate smart agricultural practices. 
  •  Identify and establish Farmer Field Schools.
  • Train Farmer Associations/Groups/Canal Committees on the operation and maintenance of project infrastructures (i.e. canals, irrigation pumps, produce stores, etc);
  • Train farmers on water use and management.    
  • Train project staff on Good Agriculture Practices.
  • Contribute to capacity development of Farmer Organizations (FOs);
  • Set up farmer producer associations and their training
  • Support with CFW activities for building canals for iirgation 
  • Organize and develop training materials to be used for training project beneficiaries;
  • Assist in the drafting of contracts and letters of agreement to be issued for services providers;
  • Collaborate with implementing partners on the training of farmers on Good Agriculture Practices, conservation agriculture, human and animal traction techniques for land preparation, and on the proper use of agricultural inputs; 
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in the establishment/strengthening of necessary channels for sustainable dissemination of agricultural knowledge;
  • Monitor the progress of trainees at regular intervals so that the quality of training is maintained;
  • Participate in preparing monthly progress reports, indicating major achievements, constraints, and recommendations;
  • Assist in preparing required reports describing activities, implementation constraints, impact, conclusions, and recommendations at end of the project period;
  • Report any challenges or constraints in a timely manner and ensure timely and effective response;
  • Travel regularly to project sites keeping compliance with prevailing security regulations;
  • Perform any other duty and activity upon instructions of the Economic Recovery and Emergency Coordinator, Agriculture Sector Coordinator, or the Officer in Charge for Somalia.    
  • Ensure that the knowledge, experience, and lessons learned on the project implementations are documented, validated, and disseminated to the donors and communities through communication, workshops, and meetings.
  •  Initiate and conduct field assessments regarding the impacts of grants on beneficiaries.
  • Use the information from assessments and other sources for planning purposes.
  • Preparation of field activities reports and lessons learned.
  • Responsible for designing, planning, and implementing of the ER related activities under EU Riverine
  •  Any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  •  Minimum of 2-5 years of working experience in livelihoods, community development, and/or community mobilization.
  •  Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Somali National University- Faculty of Agriculture)
  •  Diploma in Tropical crop cultivation
  •  Various certificates from international organizations and Agencies.
  • Long experience in field Agriculture activities
  • Experience working with non-governmental organizations, UN agencies, and local communities
  • Good command of English-spoken and written
  • Good communication skills and ability to conduct training

 

Conditions

Contract:    12 months with the possibility of extension, subject to funding and performance. Salary and other conditions are offered by DRC’s Terms of Employment for National Staff; Employment band non-management H2

Availability:   1st June 2024
