Mission and objectives

The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law is the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. A legal body with universal membership specializing in commercial law reform worldwide for over 50 years, UNCITRAL's business is the modernization and harmonization of rules on international business.

Context

The volunteer will contribute to the UNCITRAL raising awareness campaign for international commercial law development in the Latino-American and Caribbean Region. At the same time, the volunteer will contribute to increasing the UNCITRAL secretariat engagement with academic partners, students, policymakers, members of the judiciary, legislators and stakeholders in this region. Background information about the UNCITRAL Days. The “UNCITRAL Days” are a flagship annual series of regional events that the secretariat of UNCITRAL co-hosts with partner institutions of higher learning. Conceived as an annual celebration of the establishment of UNCITRAL by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 2205 (XXI) on 17 December 1966, they were first launched as a regional event in 2014 by the UNCITRAL RCAP (“the UNCITRAL AP Days”). The UNCITRAL AP Days have become a success and led to its expansion to the Latino American and Caribbean Region (LAC Days) in 2020, Africa in 2022 and the Arab States (on a pilot basis in 2023). The UNCITRAL Days aim to increase awareness of UNCITRAL texts generally and foster study, research and discussions by the participants of specific topics related to UNCITRAL’s work. The objective of this series is to increase UNCITRAL engagement with young legal scholars, law students and young legal professionals (i.e., the next generation of legal practitioners, academics and policymakers) who, in their respective capacities, may well become essential participants in, contributors to, and proponents of UNCITRAL's work in the future. The events under the UNCITRAL Days are academic, open, free and organised throughout a given year by the partner institutions, with the support of the UNCITRAL secretariat. The partner institutions that take the lead in organising them typically focus for each edition on an area of commercial law identified as being of significant importance in their jurisdiction under an overarching theme suggested by and coordinated with the UNCITRAL secretariat. Since 2020, the UNCITRAL LAC Days have reached many thousands of participants (students, professors, researchers, practitioners and government officials). Their deliverables (lectures, presentations, focused workshops, etc.) have increased awareness of UNCITRAL’s work and international trade law issues in general, which in turn led to increased participation in UNCITRAL’s work by States and assisted them in their consideration of UNCITRAL texts for domestic commercial law reform.

Task description

the volunteer will be asked to: - Create a graphic design for a series of academic events related to UNCITRAL LAC Days 2024. This graphic design has to be focused on this region. It is recommended that the volunteer use software that will enable us to edit and update the information more simply. - Adapt the graphic design or create different versions to be used as the cover page in a final report, the background page in the calendar of events, and a flyer to be posted on our social media and webpage. The expected final deliverable of the assignment will be an editable graphic design in English and Spanish. Examples of previous designs as reference are the first pages of the UNCITRAL Asia and Pacific Days Reports and of the UNCITRAL LAC Days Reports, available as non-official documents on this webpage: https://uncitral.un.org/en/commission The selected online volunteer will be provided with explanatory documentation about the UNCITRAL Days to understand the idea behind the project, which could help in designing the graphics. The assignment might involve several rounds of calls to discuss 1) expected outcomes and 2) feedback on the graphic design. The online volunteer is also expected to make corresponding further edits to the graphic to address the comments received from the UNCITRAL secretariat. The estimated starting time for collaboration on this assignment would be from July 2024.
