The World Health Organization serves as the directing and coordinating authority for public health within the United Nations system. WHO seeks to promote health, ensure everyone can attain the highest level of health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable through partnerships, people and countries.
Context
The assignment involves applying GIS technologies and methodologies to enhance the effectiveness of emergency response initiatives and humanitarian assistance. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will utilize spatial data analysis, mapping, and visualization techniques to inform decision-making, resource allocation, and situational awareness in emergency contexts. The UNV will contribute to the work of the GIS team, who is mainly responsible for conducting thorough spatial analyses, producing mapping products, and drafting geospatial reports that underscore key insights for emergency response and humanitarian operations. Additionally, they are responsible for developing interactive GIS dashboards and decision support tools to enable real-time situational awareness and resource monitoring. Moreover, the team is charged with producing training materials, technical guides, and platforms for knowledge sharing to foster greater understanding and utilization of GIS in emergency settings.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of GIS technical officer, the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: 1. Produce info-graphics and thematic maps for operational, reporting and monitoring purposes. 2. Assist in the development of needed GIS web applications and dashboards to support the decision-making process in health emergencies. 3. Conduct the needed spatial analysis in support of IMSTs and EOCs. 4. Maintain and update the Regional GIS Portal for health emergencies by updating the geo database repository, map stories, dashboards and signal and events application. 5. Assist in conducting GIS capacity-building workshops for EMR member states. 6. Work closely with the country offices to support the GIS related activities at country level and update the contact lists of GIS network. 7. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
