Mission and objectives

UNHCR’s work in Afghanistan focuses on protecting the most vulnerable and assisting newly displaced Afghans with life-saving shelter, food, water and core relief items, both within Afghanistan and neighbouring countries. Together with our partners, we are committed to staying on the ground and delivering our emergency response as long as we can access those in need.

Context

The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) has joined forces with the UN system in Afghanistan to address development challenges and demand for skilled human resources by mobilizing qualified expatriates under the “Expatriate Volunteers for Afghanistan” (EVA) initiative. Under the EVA initiative, Online Volunteers will be supporting UN programmes and projects in Afghanistan in top priority areas such as health and education as well as a variety of other areas, i.e. migration, engineering, computer science, economics, environmental protection, food processing, water resources development, youth empowerment, and community engagement, etc. To that end, UNHCR in Afghanistan are seeking to engage expert Online Volunteer in climate change to support us in integrating climate action and its pertinent targets into our existing programs, aligning with the UNHCR global strategy. The expert Online Volunteer should acquaint themselves with UNHCR's strategic framework for climate action and our organization's ongoing initiatives. Leveraging on their expertise, our goal is to formulate projects that are informed by climate change considerations, thereby enhancing our capacity to effectively address environmental challenges.

Task description

The Online Volunteer role will involve identifying areas for enhancement within our programs to ensure they align with climate change objectives from UNHCR’s global strategy on addressing climate change. We are seeking expert Online Volunteer to support our organization under the guidance of the protection climate change focal point. Their role will be to assist our organization and current programs in becoming more informed about climate change. Specifically, their roles will include: - Familiarise themselves with the UNHCR strategy on climate action - Identify areas of improvement within our programmes Make recommendations to ensure UNHCR programmes are better climate action informed. The Online Volunteers will be provided with an overview of UNHCR’s programmes and UNHCR strategy on climate change actions to conduct the analysis. An update on progress should be provided during regular calls. Successful candidate is expected to join a virtual induction call for further details of the assignment.
