Overview of position

Our client in Yemen seeks to engage the services of a highly skilled & experienced GIS & Data Management Specialist to collect, analyse & interpret geospatial data & provide data management support during the implementation of the project of integrated water resources management to Enhance Resilience of Agriculture (ERA) & food security.

Role objectives
  • Prepare GIS maps indicating the proposed interventions in the project with regards to water & irrigation infrastructure as well as flood protection & soil erosion works.

  • The map should include all relevant attributes (locations, beneficiaries etc.).

  • Prepare a database for Tuban district indicating the existing irrigation canals & control structures.

  • Support the geospatial analysis & remote sensing data interpretation within the project studies (hydrology, water allocation, water resources management etc).

  • Support the (know your catchment) activities which aim to raise awareness about the balanced used between surface water & groundwater.

  • Support the project’s data quality activities by providing data management support to the project team & implementing partners in relation to data entry, cleaning, analysis & maintenance.

  • Support the Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist in relation to the design of the project’s data collection tools (including online / automated data collection tools), development of databases, analysis & maintenance of data.

  • Support the implementation of the institutional needs assessment of NWRA & the offices of irrigation & agriculture in the targeted areas in aspects related to data management & GIS.

  • Support the institutional strengthening activities for the targeted government authorities.

  • Any other GIS / DM activities requested by the project Team Leader.

Project reporting

This role reports to the line manager.

Key competencies
  • Master’s degree in computer science, information management, geography, planning, environment science, GIS & RS or any relevant discipline from a reputed university or a bachelor’s degree with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience with a masters degree & 7 years of of relevant work experience with a bachelor’s degree is required.

  • Experience in complex / protracted emergencies would be an asset.

  • Must be fluent in both English & Arabic.

  • Experience in developing & managing databases.

  • Experience in data management including collection, analysis & maintenance.

  • Expertise working in development programs & projects (at least 2 similar assignments) is required.

  • Previous work experience in working with UN & international agencies on related projects is a distinct asset.

This role has no team management responsibility.
