The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. In its efforts to achieve this objective, the Office strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge.
Within UNHCR, the Office of the Ombudsman and Mediator is an independent, informal, neutral and confidential entity tasked to work with individuals and the organization to prevent, reduce and informally resolve workplace issues and concerns. This is done by facilitating the resolution of workplace-related disputes, supporting skill-building activities and providing upward feedback on the root causes of workplace conflicts.
The position
The UNHCR Office of the Ombudsman and Mediator is exploring effective ways to leverage technology and its significant role in shaping the future of workplace conflict resolution. The integration of technology and artificial intelligence can potentially transform traditional conflict resolution methods.
The Office is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and creative intern to support the Office’s projects related to artificial intelligence and workplace conflict resolution. The intern will assist in conducting research and provide insights into the role of technology and AI in workplace conflict resolution. The intern will also assist in designing, planning and implementing various initiatives aimed at integrating technology and AI in workplace conflict resolution. The primary objective is to inform UNHCR's diverse communities about strategies for informally preventing, reducing, and resolving workplace grievances, as well as to promote the mandate of the Office through the use of artificial intelligence and technology.
The candidate will gain knowledge of how technology and AI can be integrated into business processes. The internship will provide practical experience in researching and analysing workplace conflict resolutions strategies. Furthermore, the intern will gain a well-rounded understanding of UNHCR’s mandates and valuable experience working within the UN system in a multicultural team environment.
Duties and responsibilities
• Conduct comprehensive research on technology and AI applications in workplace conflict resolution.
• Analyze case studies and existing practices within and outside the UN system regarding use of AI and technology in workplace conflict resolution.
• Support the development of proposals for implementing technology and AI solutions to enhance workplace conflict resolution.
• Participate in the planning and implementation of business projects aimed at integrating technology and AI solutions effectively.
• Assist in quality assurance efforts for delivered work from a functional perspective, including functional testing, integration testing, business process testing and user acceptance testing, in accordance with UNHCR’s governance model.
• Help conduct business analysis and make recommendations on how AI and technology solutions for workplace conflict resolution can be used to further support UNHCR’s field operations, managers and the entire workforce.
• Support capacity-building efforts for relevant stakeholders, business process owners, and users to ensure awareness and preparedness for new AI and technology solutions.
• Provide additional support as required to fulfill the Office's communications objectives.
Minimum qualifications required.
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO ; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant, including International Relations; Information technology; Business Administration; Social Science; or closely related fields.
Desirable qualifications and skills
• Strong analytical and research skills.
• Familiarity with technology and artificial intelligence concepts.
• Good communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical issues in layman's terms.
• Previous experience in systems integration, implementation and related management and organizational change management initiatives in an international or multinational environment is preferred.
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required; working knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset.
Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Intern’s allowance for internship in Geneva, Switzerland is CHF 2707 per month.
Internships normally last two to six months with the possibility of extension up to eight months for full-time internships and twelve months for part-time internships.
Candidates with previous UNHCR Internship experience must not have exceeded the maximum total cumulative duration of eight (8) months.
