To support WHO's work on hospital transformation in the European Region, particularly focusing on sustainability in healthcare operations and investment strategies, while providing hands-on experience in international health system strengthening initiatives.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Terms of reference

Under the supervision of a technical expert in the Hospital and Health Service Delivery Programme, the intern is assigned the agreed terms of reference:

  • Conduct economic analysis and literature reviews on sustainable healthcare practices
  • Support data collection and analysis of cost-benefit aspects of sustainable healthcare operations
  • Assist in developing financial models and ROI calculations for sustainable hospital practices
  • Help integrate feedback from WHO Bonn office and other technical partners
  • participate in on-going departmental projects

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. The Learning Objectives outlined within each internship vacancy are a key component of the programme.

Within this internship, the intern will:

  • <--[endif]-->Gain practical experience in economic analysis of healthcare infrastructure projects
  • <--[endif]-->Develop skills in preparing technical documents for international organizations
  • <--[endif]-->Learn about the interface between economic analysis and healthcare facility planning

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

Start date: 1 June 2025

End date of the internship period: 30 September 2025

Total number of weeks: 16 weeks maximum 24 weeks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed three years of full-time studies in Economics, Healthcare Management, or related fields at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study leading to a formal qualification or have graduated within the past six months.

All interns should be able to demonstrate the following skills in line with the WHO core competencies:

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of specialized computer programmes, for example, statistical software such as XLStat may be an advantage.

Experience

  • Experience in research and economic analysis
  • Background in healthcare sector analysis desirable
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices in infrastructure development
  • Familiarity with international development work is an advantage

Languages

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The amount of living allowance is different in each duty station. The amount also depends on any other external financial support received by the intern (grant, scholarships, etc.) and whether their permanent residence is in the duty station of the internship. In Copenhagen-Denmark for interns with permanent residence in the duty station, the maximum amount of the allowance provided by WHO is DKK 11,651 per month. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. In addition, all interns in Copenhagen-Denmark will receive a monthly amount of DKK 1173 for meal expenses. WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

  • Please note that internships at WHO are very competitive and only a small number of applicants will be accepted every year. Only candidates under serious consideration will be contacted.
