The Director of Marketing & Communications for The Nature Conservancy’s Southern U.S. Division leads Marketing and Communications Strategy to engage and motivate diverse, and sometimes unlikely, targeted audiences to achieve our mission. The Director provides direction and leadership over a multidisciplinary team of marketing and communications professionals to inspire key audiences to help solve today’s critical environmental crises in unique ways that only The Nature Conservancy does: (1) by piloting, proving and scaling to deliver a new business model for the planet, (2) by linking natural forces and market forces, and (3) by partnering with philanthropists, policy-makers, and conservation / business / community leaders across aisles and ideologies. As a key member of both the Southern U.S. Division and the North America Marketing Leadership Team, this position is one of the most critical and influential marketing professionals at The Nature Conservancy and in the environmental field. The Director will be a creative and collaborative leader and manager who is effective with senior leaders and trustees, is well-versed in current content and media strategies, and will thrive in a dynamic space.
The Director provides direction and leadership to in service of the Southern U.S. Division and Southern Division business units (AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA). They manage staff (directly and indirectly) and partner with leaders across the Division and The Nature Conservancy to implement program/project strategies that deliver against Divisional / Business Unit / North America Region / and TNC organizational goals.
The Director of Marketing and Communications for the Southern U.S. Division leads the development and implementation of an integrated marketing and communications strategy to achieve donor/prospect engagement, facilitate conservation action, support policy outcomes, and build supporter interest and retention. They partner with the Southern Division Leadership Team on communications and marketing strategies and are accountable to the needs of the Southern Division Business Units (AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA). They effectively evaluate and convey communications priorities and ROI for team commitments. The Director partners with program directors, Southern Division team members and trustees to tell TNC’s story internally and externally. They manage a team of professionals focused on donor engagement, news and media relations, digital marketing, internal communications, policy communications, science communications, content development and branding. The Director partners with The Nature Conservancy’s global office, Marketing and Communications Division and Global teams to amplify and leverage the Southern Division’s presence and contribution.
The position is part of The Nature Conservancy’s Marketing and Communications Team (reporting to the Director of North America Region Marketing). The position has a strong dotted line to the Southern U.S. Division Director and a responsibility to focus/deliver on Divisional priorities and Business Unit needs.
As the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Southern U.S. Division, you will:
Leads the development and implementation of an integrated marketing, communications and donor engagement strategy for the Southern U.S. Division.
Works with Southern U.S. Division Director, Business Unit and program leaders to build a clear, outcomes-based communications strategy to promote the Division’s and BUs’ conservation agenda with internal and external audiences.
Manage multi-disciplinary professional team members, cultivating their talents while ensuring their well-being and professional development.
Design and direct complex and diverse projects, coordinating the work of other professionals, and ensuring program accountability.
Serves as part of the North America Marketing Leadership Team (NAMLT) to ensure access to organizational resources, coordination on priority opportunities, and sharing successes.
Develop and manage the budget, evaluate results and develop corrective strategies as needed.
Assist the Division in handling public relations including announcements, media engagement and reputation issues.
Work collaboratively across all functions to discover, develop and amplify compelling stories.
Shape and maintain a consistent and compelling voice across all media (media, presentations, ads, events, forums, written communications, etc.).
Identify and develop thought-leadership and influence strategies to enhance Division credibility, knowledge and positive perception among members of the public, donors, legislators, etc.
Decisions can commit resources for programs or initiatives in a way that has organization wide impact.
Up to 25% travel will be required across the Southern U.S. Division and North America.

Experience developing, implementing, and measuring multifaceted strategic marketing and communications initiatives, plans and programs.
Proven success in building and maintaining productive long-term relationships with partners, vendors, board members, and senior leaders both internal and external.
Management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, manage performance and help with conflict resolution on a multi- disciplinary team.
Proficiency navigating large, matrix organizational structures and cultures.
Experience directing and implementing campaigns.
Experience managing multidisciplinary communications/marketing team members.
Experience working within cultures of philanthropy.
Knowledge of conservation and environmental issues and policies.
Experience working at the confluence of public policy and communications/media.
Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, manage performance and help with conflict resolution on a multi-disciplinary team.
Excellent writing, presentation, communication, mediation and negotiation skills.
Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
Experience and/or understanding of communication best practices at a decentralized organization.
Proven success in building and maintaining long-term relationships with partners, vendors, board members and senior leaders both internal and external.
Successful track record with either client / agency relationships or servicing multiple internal ‘clients.’
Proven ability in managing the fiduciary aspects of planning and delivery of annual budgets.
Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
Multi-cultural experience preferred.
What You’ll Bring:
Bachelor’s degree in related field and minimum 10 years related work experience or an equivalent combination, including at least 3 years’ experience at a senior management level.
Experience leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team or complex program.
Experience cultivating and managing relationships with senior level executives, Board of Trustees, Board of Directors and/or external marketing contacts.
Experience fostering an environment of creativity and professional growth
Experience in program management, including broad financial responsibility and measuring results of strategic plans and programs. #LI-KM1
Salary Information:
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $118,000 – 177,000. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
