Intern in the LEO and Suborbital Utilisation Team, LEO Payload Team
Noordwijk, NL
Location
ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands
Our team and mission
The ESA Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes (D/HRE) focuses on the definition and implementation of missions for three main destinations: low-Earth orbit, the Moon and Mars.
In that context, the LEO Payload Team is accountable for the development of primarily scientific instruments to be operated in the International Space Station and other low-Earth orbit platforms. This is performed in close collaboration with the European industry, scientific community and operators as well as our International Partners.
The instrumentation developed by the LEO Payload Team addresses life sciences experiments (biology, physiology) and physical sciences experiments (materials, fluids). This enables researchers to investigate phenomena in microgravity for extended periods of time, creating a unique opportunity to advance our knowledge.

Field(s) of activity for the internship
Topic of the internship: System Engineering for Low Earth Orbit payloads in Human and Robotic Exploration
As an intern in the LEO Payload Team, you will participate in the development of scientific instruments destined for the International Space Station and other low Earth orbit missions.
You will gain hands-on experience with system engineering tasks related to the development of payloads to be operated in microgravity environment: from defining scientific requirements in collaboration with research teams, to translating them into engineering requirements, through overseeing the design phase performed by industrial partners, as well as verifying requirements through to completion of the final acceptance process.
You will also become familiar with the safety aspects related to crewed space environments including identification of hazards and their control. You will also learn the specifics of human factors engineering, essential when designing instruments with which the astronauts will directly interact.
Additionally, you will gain insight into the end-to-end implementation process of payloads aboard the International Space Station.
