The Stewardship Water Resource Manager provides technical leadership and support for the management of the Conservancy’s water resources state-wide, which includes surface and groundwater rights associated with TNC. Responsibilities include compliance with State and local reporting requirements for diversion of surface water and use of groundwater; management of relationships with external entities (e.g., water districts, academics); technical contributions to habitat and flow restoration projects; and management of data and devices for monitoring diversions, flows, groundwater and temperature. This position will ensure accurate data collection and management, compliance with all regulatory requirements, and alignment of water management with established and future programmatic water strategies. This is also a project management position on the Stewardship team, with a significant role providing technical support or leading on the design of restoration projects to address hydrology, groundwater recharge, surface flows and water budgeting. The Stewardship Water Manager will develop innovative analyses, tools and frameworks for water management on TNC lands, assist with negotiated solutions for complex water management challenges to conserve and protect natural communities. The Stewardship Water Manager will travel up to 20% of the time to Conservancy land throughout California.

What You’ll Bring:

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years of experience in natural resource management, engineering or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Under minimum supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.

  • Experience working with GIS, data management and technological tools used for remote monitoring.

  • Experience leading matrixed teams (without supervisory responsibilities).

  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.

  • Experience in partnership development with government officials, scientists, landowners, community groups, academia.

  • Experience negotiating.

  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.

Desired Qualifications

  • 5 - 7 years of experience in water resource management or engineering (or related field).

  • Experience with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling to support restoration concept development and/or flood mitigation concept development

  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and negotiations

  • Familiarity with principles of water acquisition and water rights

  • Knowledge of ecological and land management principles

  • Knowledge of current trends regarding water resource management in California

  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.

  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.

  • Experience with public fundraising

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

Salary Information:

The starting pay for this position is within the range of $73,000 – $103,125. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA and state of employment is California. Where a successful candidate’s pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's location, qualifications, skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
