Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The Strategy, Planning, Resources and Effectiveness Division (SPRED) is responsible for integrating corporate strategy, resources, and performance management to improve decision-making and ensure that UN Women manages for results in delivering on its Strategic Plan, while increasing transparency and accountability to its governing bodies and stakeholders. The Division monitors and reports on corporate results and budget implementation to ensure coherent achievement of results in line with the UN Women Strategic Plan.
The Strategic Planning Unit (SPU) in UN Women HQ focuses on assisting UN Women and partners to achieve higher quality development results through an integrated approach that links strategic planning and Results-Based Management (RBM) with more effective and new ways of working. The SPU is the custodian of RBM as well as field and HQ level strategic planning and results-based reporting in UN Women. The SPU provides quality assurance on strategic planning and results reporting exercises at the corporate and field levels. It takes a collaborative approach to strategic planning and programmatic learning, creating space for innovation and enabling UN Women and its partners to be more effective, knowledge and data-driven, and driving higher quality UN Women programming. It is also charged with engagement on all planning inter-agency initiatives, including UNDAFs. SPU is also the leading unit as business owner for UN Women results management systems to support strategic planning and results-based monitoring and reporting processes as well as data aggregation and analysis to communicate on results with stakeholders.
Description of responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Data Analysis and Monitoring Specialist, the intern will be responsible for the following:
1. Data analysis and visualization
- Conduct targeted data analysis related to baselines, milestones, targets, results and financial data from all country and regional offices as well as HQ divisions using Excel, Stata, or similar tools to identify trends and insights
- Contribute to the design and updating of Power BI dashboards showcasing UN Women’s results and performance against UN Women’s Strategic Plan based on annual reports and data from UN Women’s offices across the globe
- Support the development of AI-powered tools to enhance data collection, monitoring, and reporting processes
2. Knowledge management and digital collaboration
- Collaborate with relevant colleagues in developing visual presentations and briefs for technical teams and senior management utilizing the data analysis obtained from their work with SPU
- Support with maintaining and updating data-related intranet pages, including the page on the Strategic Plan, UN 2.0 and other SPU-led pages, ensuring accessibility and relevance of knowledge resources
- Explore innovative digital tools and approaches to strengthen data use and collaboration
3. Data Storytelling and Communication
- Support selecting and drafting engaging results stories highlighting achievements from country and regional annual reports
- Create data visualizations and infographics for external reports, dashboards, and digital platforms
- Translate data and evidence into clear, compelling narratives that show the real-world impact of UN Women’s work
4. Innovation Support
- Participate in innovation and foresight discussions, contributing ideas on data and technology solutions

Qualifications
Education:
- University studies in one of the following disciplines: Data science, statistics, international development, data communications, or other relevant subjects is required.
- Meet one of the following:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a two-year period of graduation; or
- Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.
Language:
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
- Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
Renumeration:
Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
