The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 

 In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

Background Information

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Head of Unit of the Labour Mobility and Social Inclusion (LMI) and under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission in the Country Office Belgium, the intern (M/F/X) will assist the Project Manager with the implementation labour migration pathways between third countries and Belgium. These schemes originate in several source countries and aim at filling labour shortages in the Belgian labour market.  
 

Responsibilities

General Functions

I. IMPLEMENTATION OF LABOUR PATHWAYS

In particular, the intern will in close coordination with the Project Management team:

  • Provide standard assistance with the implementation and follow-up on project activities to be carried out in all participating countries. This includes supporting the project manager in following up on projects’ work plans and deliverables, assist in the organization and follow-up of meetings, steering committees, events, etc.;
  • Provide general assistance with the implementation of the project activities in Belgium, in close coordination with the Project Manager. This includes support in identifying, mapping and liaising with stakeholders, organizing meetings, drafting meeting minutes, and creating visibility content;
  • Any other tasks as may be required. 

II. POLICY SUPPORT AND OUTREACH ON LABOUR PATHWAYS

  • Assist in collecting information to support the Project Management team in identifying and suggesting possible partnerships with the civil society (NGOs, diaspora associations, etc.) and other stakeholders (such as the Belgian government, universities and the private sector) in order to improve knowledge on new labour pathways and policies;
  • Assist in creating social media posts (videos, podcasts, visuals), newsletters, website updates, and support the Project Manager in reporting on visibility of the pathways;
  • Assist in drafting conference presentations and speeches related to labour pathways for the Project Management team, the Head of Unit or the Chief of Mission;
  • Help prepare for, participate, and follow up on meetings/conferences in the field of labour pathways;
  • Any other tasks as may be required.

  • Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration with actors such as the European Union, Governments and other partners to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration.

 

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, human rights, social science, or related field from an accredited academic institution. 

Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Applicants to IOM internships must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: 

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
Experience
  • Basic knowledge of the Belgian context and policies in the field of migration/labour market integration;
  • First working/volunteering experience within the national public sector/NGOs related to migration would be an asset;
  • Experience with multi-country, multi-partner project teams is an advantage. 
 Skills
  • Strong drafting skills in English, and Dutch or French;
  • Strong eye for detail;
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills;
  • Strong communication and diplomatic skills, applied in a professional environment;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds.
 Languages
  • Fluency in English, and Dutch or French is required.
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. 
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

There are two internship positions, with one starting on 1 March 2026 and the other on 1 August 2026.

The internship is subject to local recruitment: only persons holding a valid residence and work permit for Belgium will be eligible for consideration.

The intern is expected to apply and obtain a scholarship to cover his/her costs of living during the internship. An application can be submitted, for instance, to the Flanders Trainee Programme - Departement Buitenlandse Zaken (fdfa.be), or Wallonie-Bruxelles International (wbi.be).

The start of the internship position is based upon availability of funding for the position.

  4. IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
  5.
