Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Director (OD), United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Office of Director UNOOSA . The Office of the Director (OD) is responsible for supporting the Office’s overall direction, administration and management, leading external relations and public information activities, overseeing coordination and cooperation with entities involved in space-related activities, the maintenance of the United Nations Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space and the implementation of assigned partnerships, initiatives and activities. The OOSA-Office of the Director internship is for two (2) months with an opportunity for extension up to a total of six (6) months, pending on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. For more information on UNOOSA, please visit the following website: www.unoosa.org Selected interns may work remotely from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home country and Austria as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: 1. Prepare various written outputs of the Office, e.g. background papers, analytical and briefing notes, and sections of official reports and studies. 2. Support, as necessary, the implementation of fundraising activities originating from the Office of the Director, outreach initiatives as well as external relations activities. 3. Draft background notes, papers, factsheets, spreadsheets and other documents in support of the Office’s fundraising activities and other administration obligations, including updating internal databases and other planning tools. 4. Prepare inputs for publications, draft speeches, statements and presentations for the Director to major global conferences and meetings of the United Nations and space-related entities, the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subsidiary bodies. 5. Provide general administrative support, if needed. 6. Prepare monthly reports, summaries, meeting minutes, standard operating procedures and other management related outputs. 7. Perform other tasks as necessary

Qualifications/special skills

The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Be computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
