Your team

You will be part of the Monetary and Economic Statistics Division in the Directorate General Statistics. Our Directorate has around 350 staff providing statistical products and services, including a whole range of aggregated and disaggregated data, to inform not only central banking and banking supervision policy decisions but also the public at large.

Our Division is responsible for developing, compiling and disseminating statistics and statistical indicators. We provide related user services regarding statistics on monetary financial institutions, other financial corporations, financial stability and financial integration in the euro area and the European Union. We also produce general economic statistics, including on prices and costs, and surveys on non-financial sectors. This position will be based in the Economic Statistics Section.

In your role as an Economist-Statistician, you will work closely with users of statistics in the Directorate General Economics and other ECB business areas. You will also cooperate closely with various other teams in the Directorate General Statistics, as well as statisticians in the national central banks and Eurostat.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As an Economist-Statistician you will:
  • contribute to the consolidation of the new IT database platform and procedures for producing and disseminating statistics;
  • support the review and enhancement of data production and validation functionalities in the new database environment, including drafting technical and user documentation;
  • participate in the regular production of macroeconomic statistics, including data validation, derivation of indicators, metadata management, internal and external data dissemination, and providing user support on data and methodology matters;
  • work on the harmonisation and automation of statistical processes for statistics on prices, costs and the labour market.

This position offers you excellent opportunities to produce and develop statistical indicators that inform policymaking in a leading central bank. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, computer science, finance, economics, mathematics or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of four years’ professional experience in statistical production and dissemination, database management, time series analysis and/or data quality assessment;
  • knowledge of statistical standards used in the compilation of macroeconomic statistics (such as the European System of Accounts) or in processes for the exchange of statistical data and metadata (such as the Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange initiative);
  • in-depth programming skills in Python and/or R;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • extensive professional experience using IT applications and tools for testing, data management, compilation and dissemination;
  • professional experience working collaboratively in Git-based repositories (such as GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket);
  • professional experience in general economic statistics methodology and compilation, including price and labour statistics.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
