CIMMYT is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, and service-oriented professional for the position.

This position will be based at CIMMYT’s headquarters in El Batán, Texcoco, Mexico, approximately 45 minutes from Mexico City.

Specific duties:

Media Strategy & Execution

  • Implement the Media Relations operational plan aligned with CIMMYT’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Execute media outreach strategies to secure positive coverage in global, regional, and national media.
  • Monitor media coverage and produce regular reports to assess PR effectiveness and inform strategy.

Content Development

  • Write and edit press releases, media advisories, news articles, and thought leadership content.
  • Craft compelling narratives that highlight CIMMYT’s research breakthroughs, development impact, and human-interest stories.
  • Create engaging content for media channels and support donor communications campaigns.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Collaborate with internal departments (Creative Hub, Social & Digital, Internal Communications, Executive Communications, HR, and Regional Communications) to ensure consistent messaging and integrated campaign execution.
  • Support media relations needs of the Executive Team and coordinate communications for HR-related events and external campaigns.

Media Engagement & Events

  • Plan and manage media events including press conferences, interviews, and briefings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets.
  • Respond to media inquiries and support crisis communication efforts.

Research & Innovation

  • Conduct research on media trends, industry developments, and emerging issues to identify opportunities for coverage.
  • Stay current with communication technologies and best practices to enhance media engagement.

Project & Campaign Management

  • Coordinate and execute internal and external communications projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Negotiate contracts and manage deliverables related to external communications vendors or partners.
  • Support the implementation of donor cultivation plans through targeted media activities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in media relations, public affairs, or strategic communications, preferably in an international or research-focused organization.
  • Proven track record of securing media coverage and managing media events.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills in English; Spanish and/or French proficiency is a plus.
  • Experience with media monitoring tools and analytics platforms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and cultures.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
