What we do

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

 

Purpose

The Mechanic Auto electrician carries out preventive maintenance and repairs on ICRC vehicles and other logistics equipment in accordance with guidelines from headquarters and manufacturers’ recommendations.

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

• Carries out repairs on trucks, light vehicles, generators, forklifts and other ICRC mechanical equipment and takes part in welding, body repairs and painting as required;

• Carries out preventative maintenance on ICRC vehicles, pumps and generators, to internal and/or the manufacturer's specifications;

• Ensures that all service and repair forms are correctly filled out and forwarded for all jobs carried out;

• Ensures that spare parts and consumables stocks are kept at the agreed levels; takes part in placing orders for spare parts and equipment as required;

• Ensures that technical and personal security standards are followed as regards their work;

• Assists with fuelling and cleaning vehicles where required;

• Is responsible for tools or other property issued to them by the ICRC;

• Actively assists in keeping inventory for the workshop and its stores as required;

• Supervises, trains and coaches the Mechanic's Helper.

Certifications / Education required

• Technical school degree or equivalent experience;

• Good oral skills and basic reading and writing skills in English;

• Good computer skills;

• Driving license B;

• Driving license C and D an asset.

 

Professional experience required

• Two years' work experience in a similar position;

• Knowledge of welding and electricity;

• Experience working with generators an asset;

• Knowledge of boats and motorcycles an asset;

• Very good knowledge of the local area and integration into a professional network.

• Type of contract: 1-year Fixed term contract (renewable subject to Budget discussion and performance)
