What we do

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

 

The Light Vehicles Driver transports people and goods in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with ICRC rules and regulations and national traffic laws.

 

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

 

  • Drives light vehicles to transport people and/or material in strict adherence to internal security rules and national traffic laws;
  • Constantly monitors security conditions on the road;
  • Ensures that goods are stored inside the vehicle according to local, international and ICRC safety standards (attachment and distribution of goods, etc.);
  • Checks their assigned vehicle(s)' equipment, general functioning and body condition and ensures that it is kept fuelled and clean inside and out;
  • Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary;
  • Immediately reports accidents, defects and/or missing equipment to management;
  • Can act as head of convoy as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules and timeframe for the convoy).

Certifications / Education required

 

  • Driving license;
  • Secondary school diploma;
  • Additional vocational training in mechanics or another relevant field desirable;
  • Knowledge (spoken and written) of English;
  • Knowledge of the local language(s).

 

Professional experience required

 

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Light Vehicles (Land Cruiser) driver or in a Similar position;
  • Good conversational in English and Arabic;
  • Intermediate level in computer skills is an asset;
  • Very good knowledge of Geographically assigned enviroment;
  • Masters 4x4 driving and VHF Radio system use;
  • Basic mechanical skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to security constraints, and cultural differences;
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Adapting & Learning, Teamwork, Planning, Organization & Assessment: Communication (ability to express views and ideas) Security Management.
